FARGO, N.D. – A day after not recording a hit against North Dakota State starter Krista Menke, the IUPUI softball team put six runs on the board against the Bison pitcher in the series finale but the NDSU offense exploded for 14 runs giving it the series sweep over the Jags.
The win on Sunday upped the Bison record to 40-9 overall, while the Jaguars fell to 31-16.
Similar to Game 2 of the series, IUPUI was the first to strike when
Roni Patterson doubled home
Morgan Schlobohm to put the Jags in front, 1-0, but NDSU would score 12 unanswered runs in its first four at-bats to open a 12-1 lead.
North Dakota State was three outs away from finishing off the five-inning win but IUPUI had other ideas as it rallied for five runs in the fifth to cut its deficit to 12-6. Both
Eryn Dillon and
Taylor Chitwood had RBI base hits during the frame, but the bulk of the scoring came on a three-run homer from
Megan Cory.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the Bison tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the 14-6, six-inning victory.
With the regular season now complete, IUPUI enters next week's Summit League Tournament, which will be played in Fargo, as the No. 3 seed. The Jags open tournament play against sixth-seeded IPFW at 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 6.
