FARGO, N.D. –
Roni Patterson drove in a career-high five runs, and
Brooke Boetjer and
Emili Escamilla combined to toss a no-hitter guiding the IUPUI softball team to a 13-0 win over Fort Wayne in a single-elimination contest on the opening day of the 2015 Summit League Softball Tournament at the Ellig Sports Complex on the campus of North Dakota State University.
Boetjer went 3.0 innings, walked two and struck out three to pick up her 21st win of the season while the Jags improved to 32-16. Escamilla relieved Boetjer in the fourth and added a walk and two strike outs to complete the shutout win.
Patterson led the way with three hits en route to her 5 RBI, which was one RBI short of
Taylor Chitwood's Summit League single-game record set a season ago. Chitwood and
Maggie Good joined Patterson with multi-hit outings.
The Jags couldn't have drawn up a better start offensively as six of the first seven batters reached base resulting in five runs. Both
Ali Mosier and
Morgan Schlobohm were both walked to start the bottom of the first, and then Patterson plated Mosier with a double over the center fielder's head. Schlobohm scored on the next at-bat thanks to a sacrifice fly from
Eryn Dillon, and a single from Chitwood followed to up the cushion to 3-0. The final two runs of the innings were scored on a passed ball and a RBI single from
Megan Cory capping a five-run start for the Jaguars.
A three-run home run for Patterson in the second highlighted a four-run frame that boosted the lead to 9-0, before the Jags lead grew to double digits in the fourth on an opposite field, solo home run from Good. A two-run, pinch-hit single from
Jazmine Pedrotti and another RBI single from Patterson ensued after Good's home run to boost the lead to 13-0 through four innings.
Meanwhile, in the circle Boetjer walked two of the first three batters she faced before settling down. Following the second walk, Boetjer retired the next eight Mastodons in a row before handing the ball off the Escamilla.
Similar to Boetjer, Escamilla was in a little bit of trouble in her first inning of work when an IUPUI error and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second with one out, but a strike out and a ground out ended the threat. In the fifth, Escamilla gave up a one-out walk, but a fielder's choice and a strike out closed out the double-digit win.
The win advanced the Jags to the double elimination portion of the tournament and they will continue action against second-seed South Dakota at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday, May 8. The winner will advance to play the winner of the North Dakota State/South Dakota State game on Saturday, May 9, while the loser will play the loser of the Bison/Jackrabbits contest at 6 p.m. ET on Friday.
