FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Leading by two runs at the end of five innings, the IUPUI softball team used an 11-run sixth inning to not only finish off a 14-1 win, but also claim the series win over in-state foe Fort Wayne in Summit League play on Sunday.
Maggie Good and
Ali Mosier both hit two home runs on the day, with Good totaling a career-high five RBI. Mosier's two home runs were of the solo variety, and it marked the second time this week that she hit multi-home runs in a game. The two round-trippers also boosted her season total to 12, which ties for the school's D-I era program record.
IUPUI (23-11, 5-4 Summit) used Mosier's two solo shots in the first and third innings, respectively, to take a 2-0 lead before a solo home run for the Mastodons cut their deficit in half, 2-1, through three.
A one-out, solo home run for Good in the fourth re-established the Jaguars' two-run lead at 3-1, but both starting pitchers were able to get out of some jams in the opposition's next at-bats keeping the two-run IUPUI lead intact.
Then in the sixth the flood gates opened and it started when Good blasted a three-run shot to center field that scored
Eryn Dillon and
Taylor Chitwood, who reached base via a single and double, respectively. The inning continued with a
Megan Cory single and both
Sarah Lawrence and Mogan Schlobohm reached on errors to load the bases for Mosier, who plated a run on a five-pitch walk.
A fielder's choice eliminated a runner at home but kept the bases loaded for
Roni Patterson and another Mastodon error scored two more runs upping the cushion to 9-1.
Eryn Dillon, Good and Lawrence each drove in a run and Cory doubled home two runs to cap off the 11-run frame.
Emili Escamilla then put down Fort Wayne in the sixth without a problem to finish off the win. Escamilla went the full six innings giving up four hits and a run while striking out six.
Up next for the Jags is a doubleheader at Indiana State on Tuesday, April 7. Game 1 is set for a 3 p.m. start.
