MACOMB, Ill. – RBIs from
Eryn Dillon and
Maggie Good in the seventh inning of Game 2 capped off a come-from-behind win for the IUPUI softball team giving it a doubleheader split against Western Illinois in Summit League action Saturday afternoon.
The Jags mustered just two hits in the opener resulting in a 2-1 loss, before scoring three runs in the final two innings of Game 2 to post a 7-5 win. The split moved the Jaguars record to 24-12 overall and 6-5 in the conference, while WIU dropped to 13-14 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Emili Escamilla got the start for IUPUI in the opener and yielded just four hits in six innings, but one of those was a two-RBI double from Teagan Walsh in the second that gave the Leathernecks a 2-0 lead.
The top of the order drew three walks in the sixth to load the bases with nobody out, and Dillon singled during the next at-bat to bring IUPUI within one, 2-1. Looking to tie the game or take the lead, the Jags could not capitalize as a fielder's choice and a double play ended the threat and kept Western Illinois in front.
IUPUI again looked to knot things in the seventh getting a runner to second base with one out, but consecutive fielder's choices ended the game giving the Leathernecks the win.
Western Illinois carried the momentum of its Game 1 win into Game 2 scoring a run in the second to get on the scoreboard first, but a RBI single from
Roni Patterson and a two-run double from
Maggie Good in the third propelled IUPUI in front, 3-1.
The Leathernecks scored once in their half of the third only to have Mosier push the IUPUI lead back to two in the fourth on a RBI double, but a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth for WIU catapulted it in front, 5-4.
A Mosier RBI single in the sixth evened things up and after Escamilla set down the Leathernecks in the bottom of the sixth in relief of starter
Brooke Boetjer, RBI from both Dillon and Good in the seventh gave the Jags the lead for good. In the bottom of the seventh, Escamilla again retired the side in order to avenge the Game 1 loss.
The Jaguars and Leathernecks conclude their series on Sunday, April 12, at Noon ET.
