MACOMB, Ill. – The IUPUI softball team scored in each of the first three innings and that was enough as the Jags took another series finale, 6-3, Sunday afternoon against Western Illinois.
With the win, the Jags have now claimed wins in all four Summit League series finales this season as they improved to 25-12 overall and 7-5 in conference action. Western Illinois fell to 13-15 overall and 3-6 in league play.
After watching Western Illinois score first in each of the first two games of the series, IUPUI was the first to strike on Sunday as it took advantage of a lead-off walk in the first inning to get on the board.
Ali Mosier started the game with a four-pitch walk before moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt from
Delilah Wright. Mosier moved a base closer to home with a steal of third, before easily scoring on a double from
Roni Patterson to put the Jaguars in front.
The Leathernecks responded with two runs in their first at-bat on a two-run home run, but IUPUI catapulted back in front with three runs in the second. All of the damage came with two outs and the bases loaded as Mosier brought home one of the runs on a bases loaded walk and Wright doubled home two runs to make the cushion 4-2.
A
Maggie Good RBI double and a RBI ground out form
Taylor Chitwood in the third widened the lead to 6-2, and that would be all the run support
Emili Escamilla would need.
Despite WIU advancing runners to at least second base in four of the final five innings, Escamilla gave up just one run after the third inning and ultimately finished off the complete game giving up seven hits while striking out two helping IUPUI complete the 6-3 win.
Good led the way offensively with a career-high four hits, accounting for half of the team's total.
Up next for the Jaguars is a mid-week, non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14, at the IUPUI Softball Complex. Game 1 is set for a 3 p.m. start.
