Eryn Dillon and two RBI each from
Taylor Chitwood and
Jazmine Pedrotti to claim a doubleheader sweep over Northern Kentucky Tuesday afternoon at the IUPUI Softball Complex, tying the program's D-I era record for most wins in a season.
The 1999 season, which marked IUPUI's first season in the Division I ranks, served as the last time the Jags finished with 27 wins and that season they finished 27-25. Behind Dillon's four RBI and wins from
Brooke Boetjer and
Emili Escamilla, the 2015 edition of the Jags moved to 27-12 overall with wins of 5-2 and 7-3 over the Norse on Tuesday.
In the opener, NKU jumped out to the early lead scoring twice in the first, but the Jags methodically fought back beginning in the third.
Morgan Schlobohm and
Ali Mosier started the inning off with a single and a walk, respectively, before executing a double steal to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Following a fly out and a walk, Dillon lifted a fly ball to the warning track in right field to score Schlobohm and cut the deficit in half.
Boetjer quickly retired the Norse in the fourth bringing her offense back to the plate, and two NKU errors helped the Jags take the lead. A dropped fly ball in right field and a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt in the first three at-bats of the inning scored a run for the Jags, and then Mosier plated a run on a sharp RBI single to right giving them a 3-2 lead.
Dillon then gave the pitching staff a lead some insurance runs when she hit a two-run home run to center to build the lead to 5-2. Boetjer got out of a jam in the sixth without giving up a run, and then Escamilla did the same in the seventh to preserve the win and pick up her first save of the season.
Dillon continued to cause problems for NKU as she drove in another run in the bottom of the first in Game 2 to put the Jags on the board first, before a two-run, pinch-hit double from Pedrotti in the second lifted the IUPUI cushion to 3-0 through two innings.
The Norse inched within a run scoring twice in the top of the third, but
Taylor Chitwood got those runs back in a hurry when she followed a
Maggie Good double with a two-run shot to center field to boost the Jags margin back to three, 5-2.
Schlobohm drove home a run in the fifth on a RBI double to up the lead to 6-2, but Northern Kentucky continued to hang around crossing the plate once in the sixth trimming the IUPUI lead to 6-3.
IUPUI, however, tacked on another run in the sixth for good measure, and Escamilla finished off the Norse in the seventh to pick up her 11th win of the season.
3The Jags will have a week off before returning to action next Tuesday (Apr. 21) at Indiana State. That game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
