INDIANAPOLIS - In a tightly contested match that featured a pair of singles match-ups that advanced to three sets, it was Butler who came away with a 4-3 win over the IUPUI women's tennis team Friday evening at West Indy Racquet Club.
The Jags dipped to 7-9 overall, while Butler improved to 6-14.
The Bulldogs took the early one-point lead by sweeping all three doubles matches, but two of the three matches were won by the slimmest of margins. Butler won at the top two spots, 8-6, before earning an 8-3 win at the final spot to move on to singles with the lead.
Valeriia Lavrenchuk won at the No. 1 position (6-2, 6-4), but Butler earned straight-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions to seize a two-point cushion.
Matches at the No. 3 and 4 and positions went to three sets with
Bobbi Modesto and
Samantha Mayer each overcoming first-set losses to win their matches. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs earned the straight-sets win at the five spot to finish the one-point win.
The Jags will have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, April 11, against Denver.
