SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. –
Taylor Chitwood drove in four runs and
Brooke Boetjer gave up just one earned run over nine and two thirds innings leading the IUPUI softball team to a pair of 5-2 wins over Cal Poly in the first two games of the 2015 Mustangs Classic Thursday evening at Bob Janssen Field.
The wins improved the Jags to 12-3 on the season and extended their winning streak to eight games. Boetjer picked up the win in both games, upping her record to 10-3.
Playing outdoors for the first time in three weeks, the Jags couldn't have asked for a better start in the opener scoring three runs before the Mustangs had a chance to hit.
Ali Mosier saw four pitches before depositing a double in left field to get the game started, and two batters later she scored on a
Roni Patterson RBI single. After stealing second, Patterson scored on a
Taylor Chitwood single, and then the inning was capped off on a two-out RBI double from
Maggie Good.
Brooke Boetjer continued her dominance in the circle as of late throwing six scoreless innings before the Jaguars offense would tack on two more insurance runs in the seventh on an
Eryn Dillon double.
Those runs would come in handy with the Mustangs scoring two runs, one of which was unearned, in the bottom of the seventh, before Boetjer finished off the 5-2 win and her seventh complete game of the season.
In Game 2, it was Cal Poly who took the early lead scoring a run in the bottom of the second to go in front, 1-0, but IUPUI got that run back in the next half inning when Patterson drilled the first pitch of her at bat over the center field fence to even things at 1-1.
An inning later, it was a Mustangs error that would help the Jaguars seize their first lead of the game. A fielding error from the right fielder off a ball hit from Chitwood put her on second base with nobody out. Two fly outs kept her on second, but
Megan Cory delivered a clutch two-out double to score Chitwood and catapult the Jags in front, 2-1.
However, starting pitcher
Emili Escamilla ran into some trouble in the fifth giving up three hits in the first four plate appearances, which evened the score at 2-2 forcing Boetjer to head back into the circle. Boetjer got out of the fifth without giving up any more damage, and after a scoreless sixth inning, the Jags offense rewarded their pitcher.
With one out in the seventh, Mosier singled to get things started and she moved into scoring position by swiping second. A bunt single from
Sarah Lawrence put runners on the corners, which preceded a walk to Patterson that loaded the bases. A fly out kept the bases loaded, but Chitwood cleared them with a three-run double to give the Jaguars a three-run cushion heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Following a leadoff single, Boetjer forced a ground out, struck out a batter, and then earned a fly out to finish off the doubleheader sweep and the 5-2 victory.
IUPUI returns to action on Friday, March 6, when it takes on Sacramento State and Southern Utah at 2:30 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET, respectively.
