Photo GalleryINDIANAPOLIS - After falling behind by a point in doubles play, the IUPUI women's tennis team needed to win four of the six singles matches and it did just that to earn its first win of the season Sunday afternoon against the University of Indianapolis.
The Jags lost a pair of 8-5 decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but they were able to carry some momentum into singles play with
Bobbi Modesto and
Rachael Bridegroom teaming up for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Three of the six matches went three-sets, and of the straight-set decisions the Jaguars claimed two of those three victories with
Valeriia Lavrenchuk and
Abbey Neff winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots by scores of 6-1, 6-2, and 7-5, 6-3.
In the three-set decisions,
Samantha Mayer overcame a first-set loss to win sets two and three, 6-3, 6-2, to put IUPUI a win away from victory, and it got that win when Bridegroom came away with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, victory at the No. 5 spot.
The Jags continue their road swing next weekend when they travel to the State of Missouri to take on Missouri and Missouri State. The Jaguars and Tigers meet on Sat., Feb. 7, in Columbia, Mo., before IUPUI travels to Springfield, Mo., to take on the Bears on Sunday, Feb. 8.
