INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI junior
Logan Walling led the way for the IUPUI volleyball team with a career high 15 kills as the Jags swept South Dakota State, 3-0, Friday evening at The Jungle. The Jags (13-6; 4-1) hit .365 to cruise 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 over the Jackrabbits (1-19; 0-4).
Walling found her way into the IUPUI record books hitting .700, the third highest percentage all-time for any Jag with 20 or more attempts in a match.
In the first set, the Jaguars jumped out to an early lead going up four before South Dakota State brought it back to a two-point game at 9-7. IUPUI would win the next three points to go up 12-7 but the Jackrabbits again pulled back within two.
At 12-10 the Jags would extend the lead to five at 18-13 and finish off the set on a 7-2 run taking the first set 25-15.
Gabby Fisher led the way for the Jags in set one with five kills while hitting .429, and
Kelly Wachtel added four kills of her own, hitting .600.
Set two again saw the Jags jump out to an early lead as a 5-1 run to start the set was capped off by a Walling block. South Dakota State would fight back and take the lead at 12-11 but kills by Walling,
Kaitlyn Hickey and
Kori Waelbroeck sparked a 10-1 IUPUI run giving it a 21-13 lead. From there the Jags would finish out the second set 25-18 to take a two-set lead.
After the second set, Walling led the Jags with eight kills while hitting at a .800 clip.
In set three, IUPUI jumped out to an 11-2 lead. The Jags would extend the lead to 11 at 17-6 before finishing off the sweep with a 25-16 victory.
While Walling led the Jags in kills, Hickey reached double figures with 10 of her own and Waelbroeck finished with nine.
Courtney Halter had 16 digs on a night that the Jags out dug SDSU, 53-38.
IUPUI is back at The Jungle tomorrow night against North Dakota State. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
