INDIANAPOLIS – Sophomore
Kori Waelbroeck led IUPUI with 17 kills as the Jags (14-6; 5-1) powered their way past North Dakota State (12-8; 3-4) to a 3-1 victory Saturday night.
Two other Jaguars,
Kelly Wachtel and
Kaitlyn Hickey also finished with double digit kills, posting 11 and 10 respectively.
The first set saw IUPUI fall behind early 9-6. After a timeout by head coach
Steve Payne the Jags responded with a 10-1 run to take a 16-10 lead. IUPUI was able to maintain the lead on route to a 25-18 first set win.
The Jags were led on offense by Waelbroeck with six kills and
Gabby Fisher added five of her own. Hickey did not register a kill in the first set but did have eight digs.
In set two, the Jags and North Dakota State went back and forth early. With the score 11-9 in favor of the Bison, NDSU would win 14 of the next 7 points and take set two 25-15, tying the match at one set a piece.
The Jags fell behind early in the third set 4-1 but used a 13-3 run to take a 14-7 lead midway through the set. After that Hickey had three kills to lead the Jags the rest of the way to a 25-15 victory in set three and a 2-1 match lead.
Set four did not see a team take a three-point lead until an ace by
Courtney Halter, one of six on the day for IUPUI, gave the Jags a 19-16 lead. North Dakota State would bring the score back within one at 19-18 but IUPUI would close out the fourth set on a 6-1 run, take set four 25-19, and win the match 3-1.
IUPUI heads on the road for two games next week. The Jags will take on South Dakota Friday, Oct. 16 and face league leading Omaha, Saturday, Oct. 17.
