INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men's soccer team plays host to IPFW on Sunday (Oct. 18) in a 3 p.m. match at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The Jags are still searching for their first mark in the win column, but they're very much alive in Summit League play.
The Jags fell 2-0 to Northern Illinois on Tuesday night (Oct. 13), moving their record to 0-7-5.
IUPUI and IPFW have met 22 times as the Jags hold the series lead with a record of 12-9-1 all-time.
Injuries
IUPUI has battled injuries all season long. Head Coach Isang Jacob has played a significant number of freshmen who have made huge contributions, including four across the back line. Those injury struggles could turn around this weekend as missing sophomore striker
Uriel Macias hopes to return to the pitch. Junior
Harold Agyeman-Prempeh might also return after missing a pair of recent matches.
Usen
The Jags' other sophomore striker,
Emmanuel Usen, returned a few games back and has given IUPUI a lift in their attack. The Jags have attempted 33 shots in their last two matches, as Usen has helped create scoring chances and draw the attention of the defense.
Hoffar
Senior
Clint Hoffar leads the Jags in goals this season with four. The team captain has been flexible in 2015, stepping into different positions wherever Coach Jacob needs him. Hoffar's leadership has been evident in a season where the Jags are battling for a result week in and week out.
Cortes
Senior keeper
Eduardo Cortes' save count is now at 77 on the season. That number is the second-highest in the country. His saves per game average of 6.42 is third in the nation. Cortes has moved into second on the all-time saves list at IUPUI, behind only Armando Femia (01'). The Dallas, Texas native has preserved numerous draws for the Jags and he'll be relied on for some game-changing saves on Sunday.
Summit League
Despite the record, the Jags are 0-0-2 in Summit League play, snagging draws with No. 23 Omaha and No. 8 Denver, who are currently first and third in the Summit League table, respectively. With two points, IUPUI is one win away from jumping to the top three in the table.
IPFW
The Mastodons (4-7) are 1-1 in Summit League play, sitting a point above the Jags.
IPFW's season has been filled with streaks. They began the year 0-2 before reeling off three straight wins to get to 3-2. The Mastodons followed that streak with four consecutive losses before a recent win against Eastern Illinois and a loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday (Oct. 14).
IPFW is balanced offensively. The 'Dons have 10 players who have contributed goals this season, with their two leaders in goals scored (Jose Rodriguez and Austin West) at three apiece.
Game Time
Sunday's (Oct. 18) 3 p.m. rivalry match at Michael A. Carroll Stadium will be the Jags' second-to-last home game. The match will also begin a run of four Summit League matches in the next five games.
Admission for Sunday's match is free but standard IUPUI parking rates may apply.
