Live VideoINDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men's soccer team travels to Dekalb, Ill. on Tuesday (Oct. 13) for another non-conference match between Northern Illinois. The Jags are still searching for their first win after playing to yet another draw on Saturday (Oct. 10) in a 2-2 decision with Bowling Green. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central) at the NIU Soccer Complex.
Northern IllinoisThe Salukis (6-3-0) have four overtime wins that include Green Bay (1-0), Marquette (3-2), Eastern Illinois (3-2) and Bowling Green (1-0).
NIU sophomore Luke Read leads the Salukis with five goals on just 16 shots (11 on frame).
Luck of the DrawThe Jags (0-6-5) have seen seven out of 11 contests need extra time this season, while playing to five draws. Head Coach
Isang Jacob has built a tough defense, involving mostly freshmen, and paired it with one of the best keepers in the nation. A trio of freshmen defenders including
Ryan Machonga,
Nick Anderson and
Ben Thornton have held down the Jags' back line, and while IUPUI is solid defensively, they've yet to outscore an opponent. On top of their five draws, the Jags have seen five of their six losses decided by just one goal.
Protecting the NetIUPUI senior keeper
Eduardo Cortes has been a force in goal this season. The Jags' goalie is second in the nation in both saves (74) and saves per game (6.72). Cortes also boasts a save percentage of .796.
Directing a back line of predominantly freshmen, the senior keeper has incredible distribution skills that go unseen in the stat line.
Fresh LegsThe Jags have been plagued with injuries this season, losing their pair of sophomore strikers–
Emmanuel Usen and
Uriel Macias–to injuries for much of the year. A host of other Jags have battled health issues this season. IUPUI freshmen have stepped up in their absence, giving the Jags a chance to build depth and add fresh legs.
Usen returned to the lineup last Saturday (Oct. 10). He didn't finish an opportunity but he created three scoring chances up top.
This WeekTuesday night's contest (Oct. 13) will take place in Dekalb, Ill. with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET before the Jags return home for a rivalry match with IPFW on Sunday (Oct. 18) at 3 p.m.
