DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team built one-goal advantages on a pair of occasions before yielding two unanswered goals to fall to Wright State, 3-2 at Alumni Field on Sunday (Sept. 7). Freshmen Uriel Macias and Emmanuel Usen both scored their first career goals in the defeat against a WSU team that had yielded just one goal in the season's first three matches. WSU's Jake Stovall scored a pair of goals for the host Raiders, including the game-winner in the 73rd minute.

"The guys we brought in to score goals, scored goals today. We were dangerous in the attack," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "We just needed to pay more attention to detail and minimize our mistakes. We allowed them three goals, all on set pieces. The reason we gave them goals were because of mistakes on the ball defensively. These are things that are fixable.

"It's a positive thing today. We played a very veteran Wright State team and played them well. As we continue to mature, we're going to get better. I know our guys will continue to grow and the best is yet to come."

IUPUI (0-3) went in front 1-0 late in the first half as three freshmen teamed on the day's first goal. Jonathon Kopp and Ryan Olans set up the play, with Olans eventually rolling a cross through the WSU (3-0-1) penalty box. Macias, who had just come off the bench, was on the receiving end of the cross and beat WSU goalie Tyler Blackmer with a shot inside the right post.

Stovall pulled the Raiders even in the 50th minute when he and Eric Lynch hooked up for the first of two connections on the day. Lynch drove a corner kick into the middle of penalty area, where Stovall climbed the ladder and headed a shot to the left of sophomore goalie Christian Lomeli. The Jaguars retaliated just more than four minutes later when Usen drove a shot home from 12 yards out. Junior Lance Davis swung a corner kick over everyone to Jacob Singer, who centered the ball to the top of the 18. From there, sophomore Cristian Soto sent the ball in traffic to Usen, who was able to compose and hit a shot past Blackmer.

IUPUI led for exactly 55 seconds as WSU immediately answered again. This time, a foul resulted in AJ Paterson playing a restart to Zach Zwiesler, who scored for the second time this season. Stovall capped the day's scoring with a second corner kick goal, also set up by Lynch.

"They're a really good team. I would expect they'll challenge for the Horizon League title," Jacob said. "They're a veteran group and we're playing a lot of freshmen. As we continue to get guys back (from injury), we'll continue to get more dangerous."

Stovall led all players with five shot attempts while Lomeli collected three stops. Soto led the IUPUI offense with two shot attempts.

The Jaguars will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13 when they head to the Lone Star State to take on Houston Baptist at 8:00 p.m. Eastern at Sorrels Field.
