Live VideoFORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open Summit League play on Saturday night (Sept. 27) under the lights as the Jaguars take on Fort Wayne at 6:00 p.m. at Hefner Soccer Complex in Fort Wayne. IUPUI (2-4) is coming off its best showing of the year, having beaten Northern Kentucky at Carroll Stadium last Sunday.
IUPUI's recent success has come on the strength of its younger players as both
Emmanuel Usen and
Uriel Macias scored goals in the win over NKU. Macias deposited his second score of the year in the early going for the game-winner and Usen netted his team-high third goal late in the match to give the Jaguars some breathing room. Both
Clint Hoffar and
Joshua Ayala collected assists in the win, while sophomore goalie
Christian Lomeli earned his first career shutout. In doing so, Lomeli dropped his goals against average to 1.25 and upped his save percentage to .773 in his six appearances.
After being blanked in the season's first two games, IUPUI has scored seven goals in the past four games, including three at Houston Baptist on Sept. 13.
IPFW (2-3-3) is winless in its past three outings, coming off a scoreless tie with Green Bay and a 5-0 loss to Cincinnati. Tom Corey leads the Mastodons' attack with two goals in eight games as IPFW has gotten scores from nine different players this season. Corey and Andy O'Donoghue are responsible for Fort Wayne's game-winning goals this season. In goal, Raphael Kotzock blanked Green Bay and has made five appearances overall. He owns a 1.16 GAA and 21 saves this season.
Historically, IUPUI has been successful against IPFW, going 7-5 in the program's Division I era (1998-pres.). IUPUI has won four of the past five meetings between the two schools, including a 2-1 decision at Carroll Stadium last season. Then-freshman
Cristian Soto scored his first career goal in that game and
Tyler Drumm tallied the game-winner off a Hoffar assist in the 88th minute.
Saturday's game will also serve as a homecoming for two IUPUI players as Hoffar (Kendallville) and Macias (Ligonier) prepped just north of the city.
