INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team endured a long night in its 2014 home opener as the Jaguars lost 5-0 to Dayton at Carroll Stadium on Friday evening (Sept. 19). Dayton got two goals and an assist from Amass Amankona in making quick work of the Jaguars.

The five goals allowed were the most by an IUPUI opponent this season and the most since the Jaguars lost in last year's Summit League Tournament semifinals in Macomb, Ill., to top-seeded Denver by the same score.

"They're good - really good, but we just weren't sharp," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "We weren't focused at any spot on the field and they did pretty much what they wanted to do. It's unfortunate that that was the showing tonight.

"I would hope we'll learn from this and put it behind us."

IUPUI (1-4) just missed getting on the board first as sophomore Evan Smith made a determined run into the teeth of the Dayton (3-2-1) defense in the fourth minute, but saw his shot ring off the crossbar and back onto the field of play. Just more than three minutes later, Dayton capitalized on its first scoring opportunity of the night.

Amankona played Michael Frasca into space and the UD attacker rolled a shot in front of IUPUI goalie Eduardo Cortes and inside the far post. The Flyers took a two-goal lead in the 24th minute when Brian Richards hit a shot off the inside of the left post, thanks to a brilliant cross from Dillon Nino. Given space, Nino dropped a cross on Richards just outside the six-yard box, who then scored his third goal of the year.

In the 41st minute, Amankona scored on a penalty kick to seemingly bury the Jaguars.

Dayton never let off the gas as Daniel Spencer scored from in close in the 54th minute and Amankona added insurance in the 72nd minute. The Jaguars missed a scoring chance, ultimately leading to a quick counter by the Flyers. Maik Schoonderwoerd played a long ball forward to Amankona, who dribbled around Cortes before finishing in the empty net for the final tally of the night.

Dayton outshot the Jaguars 23-14 and 9-1 on goal.

IUPUI just missed breaking up the shutout in the 86th minute, but Jonathon Kopp's header tipped off the crossbar and out of play. The Jaguars also missed from point blank range earlier in the half when Clint Hoffar looped a quick pass to the top of the six-yard box, but Jonny Williams missed a scoring chance against UD goalie Chris Froschauer.

Froschauer's lone stop of the night came on a Fumio Himeno drive from distance just before halftime. Cortes made two saves before being lifted in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Christian Lomeli also made two stops in relief duty.

The Jaguars will cap the current two-game homestand on Sunday evening (Sept. 21) when they host Northern Kentucky in the backend of a doubleheader at Carroll Stadium. The women's match against Indiana State will begin the action at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by the men's match at 4:00 p.m.. Admission is free and open to the public although standard university parking rates will apply. In addition, Sunday's match will be streamed live on the IUPUI LIVE! video service. Morgan Adcock (pxp) will be on the call and the video stream is free of charge.
