VALPARAISO, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team notched its first shutout of the 2014 season on Sunday (Aug. 24), blanking Valparaiso in a 0-0 double overtime draw at Brown Field. Freshman goalie
Catherine Schmidt played 65 of the 110 minutes in net in her first career start while sophomore
Nicole Kulovitz manned the pipes in the scoreless second half. It marks the second straight year IUPUI and Valpo played to a scoreless tie.
"It was very hot; brutally hot today," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "I'm very pleased with the girls' effort level and their ability to come in and compete in the game was way better than it was on Friday. We had some decent looks early, but we're still not getting as many shots as we need to for our games to be successful. In terms of winning 50-50's and challenging for the ball and being very difficult to get past, we did a really good job."
Sophomore
Alyssa Fox put a rocket on frame in the game's 74th minute, setup by classmate
Tori Minnich, but VU goalie Sydney Galvez-Daley made a critical save to keep the match scoreless.
IUPUI (0-1-1) had two prime scoring chances early in the first overtime period, beginning with freshman
Krissy Kirkhoff hitting the post on a shot attempt. Moments later on an ensuing corner kick, senior
Anna Rode sent a ball in, setting up a
Taylor Heidorn shot attempt. However, the senior's shot flew wide right of target.
For the match, Valpo (0-1-1) outshot the Jaguars 15-8, but only three of the Crusaders attempts were on target. Kulovitz made two stops in her 45 minutes of action while Schmidt needed just one save in 65 minutes. Kirkhoff and
Meghan Day led the Jaguars with two shots each while VU's April Cronin led all players with five attempts.
"We're coming around and making some progress. Probably not as fast as we'd like to as we let an opportunity to win a game get away from us today, but I think we're moving in the right direction," Johnson said. "We're pretty happy with the effort today and we played a lot of girls, so we have a lot of positives to take away."
The Jaguars will continue to seek its first win of the 2014 campaign when they host SIU Edwardsville in the home opener on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The match is free and open to the public with gates opening at 6:00 p.m.
