INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - IUPUI enters conference play this weekend after a 2-14 start, but comes in on a high note. They defeated Marian (15-6) on Tuesday (Apr. 1) winning each match they played.
Julie Brockman increased her team-leading win-total to four matches on the season with her win at No. 4 singles.
Rachael Bridegroom won her first match of the season at No. 2 singles 6-2, 7-5.
Vanessa Whyte,
Bobbi Modesto and
Abbey Neff each recorded their third win of the season.
Despite Tuesday's win, interim head coach
Yulia Smirnova sees plenty of room for improvement. They'll spend some time this week working on constructing points in doubles and footwork and positioning in singles play.
The Jaguars will have a short week to prepare though. They travel to Fort Wayne on Friday (Apr. 4) to begin conference play against Western Illinois. WIU hasn't had any success this season, losing all 11 matches they've played without winning a point. The trend could continue Friday as IUPUI has won the last three contests with WIU 4-0.
On Saturday (Apr. 5) the Jaguars will take on the favorites in the conference, the Denver Pioneers (6-7). Denver has been ranked in the top 75 nationally throughout the season and has been as high as 50th. Since Denver is new to the conference this year, this will be the first meeting with IUPUI. The Pioneers come into the weekend winners of four of their last five, and will play South Dakota on Friday before Saturday's match with the Jaguars.
IPFW will play the Jaguars in their final match of the weekend on Sunday (Apr. 6). The Mastodons have won the last six meetings with the Jaguars and they bring a 10-7 record into conference including wins over Butler and Green Bay in their last two matches.
The Jaguars need just one win in conference to match last year's conference record. Their match with WIU will be their first chance and begins play at 2 p.m. ET on Friday. Saturday's match with the Pioneers will start at 9 a.m. ET and the final match against IPFW will start at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday.
