Photo GalleryINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Jaguars'
Vanessa Whyte and
Julie Brockman were honored prior to the match for the final home match of their career at IUPUI, but the festivities were short lived. The Jaguars dropped their regular season finale 5-2 to DePauw, finishing the season with a 3-21 record.
The 5-2 loss marks the fifth loss in a row for the Jaguars, but this losing streak isn't as telling as the one that opened the season. Three of the five losses were by a single point, and the other two both were 5-2 and saw chances for the Jaguars to win fade away in the final couple of positions to finish.
DePauw took control early, gaining leads in each of the three doubles matches, and held each of them to sweep and claim the doubles point.
DePauw kept up its momentum to start singles play, winning the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-2. IUPUI answered though with a pair of wins from
Bobbi Modesto and
Rachel Swartwood. Despite Swartwood's match going three sets, each set was quick and the players left the court not long after the first match finished.
Tied 2-2, the Jaguars needed to win two of the final three matches. Whyte, Brockman and
Abbey Neff each lost their opening set though, setting the Jaguars pretty far back.
Neff was next off the court. Her straight-set loss left only Whyte and Brockman to try and get the win. With the light fading, both players fought to extend the match. Whyte took the second set to force a third and Brockman forced a second-set tiebreak. At that point, it was too dark outside to continue so the match was moved indoors for the conclusion.
Brockman took a 4-2 lead with a mini-break after forcing a return error from her opponent, but lost the five points and the match. Whyte also fell short in her comeback attempt. Leading 3-2 in the final set, her opponent won four of the final five games including a grueling final game that went to several deuce points.
Five straight losses to finish the season isn't the way any team wants to enter the postseason. Despite the losses, the Jaguars have gained some experience in dealing with the pressure of tight matches.
Their first match in the Summit League Tournament has them matched up with South Dakota, who won the previous match a week ago 4-3. The Coyotes will enter the match with the confidence from winning the previous matchup, but the Jaguars will come in knowing they can compete.
