CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The IUPUI women's track team will kickoff the outdoor season on Spring Break as the Jaguars compete in 2014 Charlotte 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center this week. IUPUI's participation in the meet is slated to begin with the running events on Friday (Mar. 21) with entries in the 1,500m and 5,000m races.
IUPUI's participation will begin with freshman
Valeria Guzman and
Katie Williams running the 1,500m events, followed by three Jaguars running the 5,000m later that same day. Senior
Rachel Zajac headlines the three entries, having run a school record 17:35.90 during indoor season. Sophomore
Leah Brooks holds the team's fifth-fastest time on the outdoor surface, having run 18:29.57 last April. In addition, freshman
Jennifer Emery will make her outdoor debut on Friday.
On Saturday (Mar. 22), sophomore
Julie Riggins will run the 800 and hope to lower her personal best time of 2:25.56. Later that day, six Jaguars will run the 3,000m event, led by freshman
Savannah Turner and sophomore
Lexi Hunt. Turner ran a school record 3K time of 10:10.04 during The Summit League championships during indoor season. Hunt holds the fifth-best time in school history, having run 10:19.12 a season ago. Others expected to run the 3,000m race are
Mandy Campbell,
Amy Mattingly,
Ashley Mosley and
Emily Vetor.
The Jaguars will cap their participation by running the 4x800 relay for the first time in school history. IUPUI is slated to use the quartet of Zajac, Riggins, Williams and Guzman in the relay event.
