INDIANAPOLIS – Following a two-week break, the IUPUI men's swimming and diving team returned to action Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium and the Jaguars came away with a split by defeating Western Illinois while suffering a loss to Saint Louis.
The Jaguars were dominant in a 181-59 win over the Leathernecks, but they fell just short of a sweep as SLU came away with a 138-105 win.
"We raced extremely hard but we just seemed to keep coming up short. All in all those were some of the best duel meet times we have put in, but Saint Louis was just a touch better tonight," head coach
Matt Bos said. "Hats off to them they showed up and raced incredibly well. There are a bunch of positives we can take away from this meet. Our seniors are doing a great job leading a very talented group of underclassmen and we are on the verge of really doing some great things."
The first race of the night, the 200 medley relay, was a great race from start to finish. Saint Louis took the win by just .32 seconds, but the team of
Adam Ferguson,
Jon Stoller,
Aaron Brysch and
Lennart Kuester put together an early-season mark that was just three seconds off the school record.
Runner-up finishes, however, would be the story of the night as the Jags finished with six second-place finishes on the day. Despite to flurry of runner-ups,
Tony Carroll did come away with the Jaguars lone individual swimming win of the day. Carroll was victorious in the 100 back, but it wasn't IUPUI's only wins of the day.
Cody Watts won both the 1- and 3-meter dives, with his 3-meter score tallying 338.25.
Of all the second place finishes, Stoller's mark in the 200 IM was the most impressive with his time of 1:55.02 cracking the IUPUI Top 10.
IUPUI returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when it hosts Western Kentucky at 1 p.m.
