MUNCIE, Ind. – The IUPUI women's tennis team kicked off its 2014 campaign on Friday against in-state rival Ball State, but the Cardinals came away with a 7-0 win in the opener at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
The Cardinals jumped out to the early one-point advantage winning at the second and third doubles spots by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, before moving on to singles action.
Vanessa Whyte got the nod at the No. 1 position for IUPUI but she got off to a slow start and she could not rally from an early deficit falling 6-1, 6-3.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets and all went the Cardinals way. The lone match that did not have a straight sets winner came in the sixth position between Ball State's Anna Rozenberg and IUPUI's
Julie Brockman.
After Brockman fell a set behind, she rallied for a convincing 6-2 win in the second set to force a third-set tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was close throughout, but Rozenberg came away with the clutch points down the stretch that allowed her to emerge with a 10-7 victory in the tiebreaker.
IUPUI is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when it takes on No. 21 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
