INDIANAPOLIS – For the second consecutive day, the IUPUI men's swimming and diving team came away with a split falling to Saint Louis and defeating Western Illinois Saturday afternoon at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The Jaguars downed their Summit League rival Leathernecks by a score of 206-91, but fell to the Billikens by a score of 189-109.
"We had some fun racing against Saint Louis and Western Illinois today," assistant coach
Jake Tapp said. "I thought the team battled tough today, but today showed us that we still have some things to work on moving forward."
Following a second-place showing in the 400 medley relay to start the afternoon,
James Salmon put together a solid swim to give the Jags a second-place finish in the 1,000 free timing out at 10:06.72, and second-place finishes would be the trend for IUPUI.
In the next four events the Jags had a swimmer finish second beginning with
Rich Sunkel in the 200 free (1:43.93) and
Luke Haskett in the 100 back (54.49). It continued with
Adam Ferguson in the 100 breast (59.76) and
Daniel Heringer in the 200 fly (1:57.73), before the Jags missed on a podium finish in the 50 free.
Lennart Kuester had a chance to get IUPUI's first win of the day in the 100 free but missed out on the victory by .36 seconds after timing in at 47.28. From that point, Ferguson would add another second-place showing in the 200 breast – falling short of the victory by a tenth of a second - and Sunkel would tack on a runner-up finish in the 500 free, but that would be as close as the Jags would come to an individual win.
To finish the meet, Kuester, Sunkel,
Joshua Garmon and
Jared Allen posted a mark of 3:12.88 in the 400 free relay to finish second.
The Jaguars return to action next weekend when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., and Green Bay, Wis., to meet the Panthers and the Phoenix on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18, respectively.
