INDIANAPOLIS - After breaking a lengthy losing streak at Eastern Illinois on Sunday, the IUPUI men's soccer team will have a quick turnaround when the Jaguars host Wright State in non-conference action at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Tuesday (Oct. 1) at 7:00 p.m.. The IUPUI men's team will partner with the United Way of Central Indiana on Tuesday, with members of the team wearing LIVE UNITED t-shirts during pregame.
Admission is free and open to the public,
although regular university parking rates will apply.
"I think it's very important to recognize the United Way," IUPUI Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "They play a huge role in the community and a number of our kids have benefited from the United Way. Being a member of the (IUPUI) executive committee, it's important that we do our part to honor them and help them in any way that we can."
On the field, IUPUI (0-7-3) played EIU to a 1-1 draw in Charleston on Sunday, fueled by an early goal from senior
Ian Block and a strong effort in goal by freshman
Christian Lomeli. Block put the Jags in front in the ninth minute with his second score of the year, but the high powered EIU offense finally answered in the 77th minute to force overtime. Neither team tallied the rest of the way, giving the Jaguars' their third draw of the season.
Offensively, Block and
Michael Sass lead IUPUI with two goals each and freshman
Evan Smith has a team-high two assists. Sophomore
Lance Davis has a goal and an assist from his forward spot and
Jonny Williams tallied an early season goal. Defensively, Lomeli has a 1.84 goals against average and eight saves in three appearances while
Eduardo Cortes has a 1.97 GAA and 32 stops in eight starts. Lomeli has allowed five goals in limited action as a rookie.
Injuries have taken a toll on the Jaguars' lineup though, with nine different players having missed at least one match to health. IUPUI had dropped seven straight prior to Sunday's draw in their Summit League opener. Tuesday's match is one of just three non-conference contests left on the 2013 schedule.
Wright State (2-4-1) is led by Brett Elder (4 goals, 1 assist) and Chris Dupont (1 goal, 3 assists) and goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer (0.80 GAA). The Raiders have home wins over Marshall and Valparaiso, but have yet to win away from home this season. WSU is 0-3-1 on the road with the draw being a scoreless tie at Ohio State on Sept. 17.
IUPUI is just 3-12 all-time against Wright State and has lost the last two meetings between the two schools. WSU won by a 3-0 score in Dayton last season. The Jaguars last win in the series was a 2-1 home win on Oct. 26, 2010 in a match played at nearby Park Tudor High School. Ryan Robinson and Nate Ohmer tallied for the Jaguars and Alex Mannen collected the win in goal.
