CHARLESTON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's soccer team opened its 2013 Summit League schedule with a 1-1 double overtime draw at Eastern Illinois on Sunday (Sept. 29) as senior Ian Block provided the Jaguars' only offense. IUPUI jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Block's second score of the year, but the host Panthers countered with a goal in the game's 77th minute to eventually send the match to overtime.

Neither side found paydirt in the extra periods as the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Although both sides came in seeking their first wins of the season, the Jags did snap a seven-game losing streak with Sunday's tie.

"The good news is we got a point on the road in (Summit) league play on opening weekend," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "It's good to end the losing streak.

"The boys battled. We knew Eastern (Illinois) would come out and fight us, but I'm proud of how we fought today."

A nifty set piece put the Jaguars in front in the ninth minute as freshman Evan Smith played a ball to Lance Davis on a restart. Davis crossed the ball in from the right, hitting Block, who scored past EIU goalkeeper Garrett Creasor from in close.

Smith later had to leave the match and the Jaguars' attack suffered with the rookie on the sidelines.

"We lost some momentum when Evan went out of the game," Jacob said. "Then we lost Jonny Williams in overtime, so we were really thin in the attack."

The lead stood for nearly 70 minutes until EIU (0-6-2, 0-0-1 Summit) tied the match late in regulation. EIU's Will Butler shifted a cross through the IUPUI (0-7-3, 0-0-1) box to Garet Christianson, who scored his fourth goal of the year from point blank range.

"We made an error and they capitalized on it. We knew their strengths coming in was scoring goals. I thought we did a good job of defending today, but we made a mistake and they took advantage of it," Jacob said. "Christian (Lomeli) played well. The goal wasn't his fault. He stepped up and did his job.

"He's a very good goalkeeper and that's why we brought him in."

Lomeli had to fend off a strong EIU attack down the stretch to send the game to overtime. The rookie made three of his five saves in the final seven minutes of regulation, including a great stop against EIU's Tayron Martin in the 88th minute.

Neither team seriously threatened in either overtime period, although EIU had three corner kicks and four shots total in extra time. EIU outshot the Jaguars 19-13 overall and had seven corners to IUPUI's three.

"We were very thin in the back with Cameron Knox out," Jacob said. "We just need to continue working with the athletic training staff to get some boys healthy. The boys really need to tend to their bodies and we look forward to getting home."

Davis led all players with five shot attempts from his forward spot and Block had three attempts, two of which were on goal, on Sunday. Christianson and Jake Plant led EIU with four shots each.

The draw moved IUPUI's all-time record against EIU to 4-3-4.

IUPUI will return to Indianapolis for the first of back-to-back home matches, beginning on Tuesday (Oct. 1) night. The Jaguars will welcome Wright State to Michael A. Carroll Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Live stats will be available immediately after kickoff on IUPUIJags.com.
