INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team nipped and clawed its way to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Ball State on a rain soaked Friday (Sept. 20) night at Carroll Stadium, remaining undefeated on its home turf.
Freshman
Tori Minnich took a brilliant ball from senior
Sarah Carlisle and poked in her second goal of the season to account for the Jaguars' only offense.
With heavy rains and possible thunderstorms in the area, scripts were all but thrown out the window as the two teams agreed to move up the start time by nearly 30 minutes in an attempt to get the game in. The precipitation, coupled with IUPUI's already fast Carroll Stadium turf, made play move at warp speed throughout the night.
"You have to get your game face on and really focus on what you're doing," IUPUI senior back
Kristin Pierce said. "As a center defender, you can't just let the ball go by - you have to get your full service behind you. It definitely complicates the game and also it speeds up the speed of play on an already quick turf."
While Ball State (5-2-1) had the better run of play for much of the night, it was IUPUI (3-2-3) that hit paydirt first in the game's 57th minute. Carlisle drove an incredible ball half the length of the field, hitting Minnich in stride between Ball State's two center backs. Minnich needed to only get a toe on the ball to slide a shot past the hard charging Brooke Dennis for the game's first goal.
It seemed as though the lead could stand as the Jaguars entered play having yielded just two goals in five games on their home turf. However, Ball State stopped IUPUI's home scoreless streak of more than 400 minutes with a goal in the 70th minute, beginning with a Leah Mattingly corner kick. Mattingly sent the corner into the Jaguars' 18-yard box where Kelsey Shapiro put a shot away past freshman goalkeeper
Nicole Kulovitz.
That ended up being the lone blemish against an otherwise stout IUPUI defense.
Senior
Giselle Guzman, who played a scoreless first half, returned for overtime and played 20 more scoreless minutes. The duo teamed to make nine saves while Dennis made seven saves for the Cardinals.
Jasmine Moses had a good looking shot attempt fly just wide of the far post in the game's 99th minute before IUPUI put the heat on in the second overtime. Junior
Taylor Heidorn put a strike on frame in the 105th minute and later,
Anna Rode had a shot stopped by Dennis.
In the final minute,
Lauren Kulaga had a shot fly just wide right of target and Heidorn had a shot short-hop into Dennis' stomach as time expired.
Ball State outshot IUPUI 27-16 and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Maimee Morris led the Cardinals with seven shots, putting two on target.
IUPUI will continue the homestand when the Jaguars host Butler on High School Day at Carroll Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 22) at 1:00 p.m.. In addition, that match will be televised on HTSN as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) will call the action.
