INDIANAPOLIS - The Milwaukee men's soccer team took an early 1-0 lead on a Robbie Boyd strike and never looked back as the visiting Panthers knocked off IUPUI, 3-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on an otherwise gorgeous Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon. Milwaukee spoiled freshman goalkeeper
Christian Lomeli's first career start, who made three stops and yielded three scores in the loss.
Boyd finished with a goal and an assist while Laurie Bell and Riley Weiner also tallied for Milwaukee (4-0-1). The loss was the Jaguars' fifth straight.
Senior
Ian Block and sophomore
Lance Davis led the Jaguars' offense with three shots each, both coming off the bench.
Boyd opened the scoring in the game's 11th minute after teammate Austin Toth sent a cross off an IUPUI player and towards the right side. Boyd rifled a right-footed shot to Lomeli's left for his second goal of the season.
"The kid hit a cracker," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "It was a nice shot and you credit the kid."
It remained a one goal deficit for the Jaguars until the 63rd minute, when Boyd setup the Panthers' second goal.
This time, the Milwaukee senior worked up the right sideline and rolled a cross through the Jaguars' penalty area. A first attacker ran past the ball, allowing it to center to Bell, who easily scored from six yards out. Weiner added insurance in the 81st minute with an incredible individual effort. The UWM reserve beat three defenders while working from the center of the field to the left flank before blazing an uncontested shot past Lomeli for the day's final offense.
Milwaukee finished with an 18-11 shot advantage and 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
IUPUI (0-5-2) had a great opportunity to score in the 66th minute, beginning with Davis drawing a foul near midfield. The Jaguars decided to take a quick restart and play a long pass to Block, sprinting up the right side. The well played ball hit Block in stride and the IUPUI forward settled the pass and drilled a shot at UWM's Liam Anderson, who corralled the attempt for one of his three saves.
Davis nearly solved Anderson in the first half with a looping attempt from the left flank, but the shot sailed just beyond the right post. The Jaguars' nearly broke through in the 58th minute when sophomore
Clint Hoffar drove a ball into the Panthers' box from the left side, earmarked for the 6-foot-7
Michael Sass. However, Anderson cut in front of Sass and played the drive to keep the Jaguars off the scoreboard.
"Again, we had our opportunities," Jacob said. "I thought Sass played well, but his legs were shot. He worked hard against a tough, physical defensive line. That's one of the strongest defensive groups we've seen this year, and they played like veterans.
"Overall, I was pleased with the effort. We just need to continue to believe and trust one another and good things will happen."
Bell led all players with four shots and Boyd attempted three, despite missing much of the first half after enduring a hard foul in the 23rd minute.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 0-2 all-time against Milwaukee, including last year's defeat on the road.
The Jaguars will return to action on Wednesday (Sept. 18) when they take on former Summit League foe Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday's match marks the first of three-in-a-row on the road for Jacob's squad.
