ATHENS, Ga. – Former IUPUI men’s golfer Michael Davan will tee it up for the first time in a Web.com Tour event when he competes in the Stadion Classic at UGA May 2-5 in Athens, Ga.

On Monday, April 29, Davan shot a bogey-free 7-under, 65 to qualify for the tournament, which will be played at the 7,258-yard, par-71 University of Georgia Golf Course.

Davan was one of 14 open qualifiers for the event, which also includes Brownsburg, Ind.-native and former University of Kentucky player Andy Winings - the older brother of current IUPUI freshman golfer Austin Winings.

“I had been struggling with some things in my game - mostly mental - before the qualifier, but I told myself that I need to go out there with a good attitude and have fun,” Davan said. “With that being said, I have to stay focused on my shots going forward and that was something I did a great job of on Monday.”

The Web.com Tour began a new era this season, which features a different PGA TOUR qualifying structure than in the past as all 50 PGA TOUR cards for the 2013-14 season will come through the Web.com Tour.

This week’s field is set to include 12 former PGA TOUR winners, including major champions John Daly, Lee Janzen and Todd Hamilton. Daly won the PGA Championship in 1991 and the Open Championship in 1995, Hamilton claimed the 2004 Open Championship, and Janzen took the 1993 and 1998 U.S. Open titles.

Davan, who was the Summit League Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference performer in 2012, will begin the tournament on Thursday with a 2:20 p.m. tee time. Davan is the second former IUPUI player to tee it up in an event of this magnitude, joining Adam Darrow, who has played in multiple Nationwide Tour events.

“(Tuesday) was a cool day. I used it as a day to get comfortable with the surroundings and settle in. I like the golf course and I’m looking forward to the event this week,” Davan added. “I’m feeling good about where my game is right now and hopefully I can keep it going this week.”

"Michael is an extremely talented young man that played really well at Q-School and for our golf program. He is trying to go to next level and I have no doubt that in due time he will succeed," IUPUI head coach John Andrews said. "This is just another step along the way that he needs to take and we're excited for his opportunity."
