INDIANAPOLIS – On the heels of the program’s first 20-win campaign in its Division-I era, the IUPUI women’s basketball team and head coach
Austin Parkinson added another member to its 2013 recruiting class when
Caitlyn Tolen (Oxford, Ind./Benton Central) faxed in her National Letter of Intent today to play for the Jaguars beginning with the 2013-14 campaign.
Tolen signed with IUPUI over Texas Tech and Indiana and joins three fellow incoming freshmen –
Kelsi Byrd (Crawfordsville, Ind./North Montgomery),
Mikale Rogers (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and
Nia Pappas (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) – to make up the Jaguars 2013 recruiting class. Byrd, Rogers and Pappas all signed with the Jags back in November.
“We are very excited to welcome Caitlyn to the IUPUI basketball family. She is a young lady of tremendous character and possesses excellent leadership qualities,” Parkinson said. “Her versatility to play any guard spot as well as her knack for scoring the basketball will add value to our program.”
Tolen finished her career as Benton Central High School’s all-time leading scorer with 1,648 points, surpassing Skylar Gick’s previous record of 1,444 points. As a senior, the 5-10 guard averaged 24.3 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 4.0 apg and 4.0 spg, while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 88.9 percent from the foul line.
For her efforts as a senior, she was a 2013 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway Girls All-State and Indiana All-Star selection, in addition to being named the
Journal & Courier Big School Player of the Year.
Her best performance of her senior year came in a 15-point win over West Lafayette on December 6, 2012, when she registered a triple-double - 27-points, 10-rebounds, 10-assists - en route to being recognized on the
USA Today American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week list.
The Jaguars four signees are set to come in and help replace their two seniors that depart due to graduation. However, both of those seniors were four-year starters for the Jags, including their all-time Division-I era leading scorer in
Kerah Nelson.
