INDIANAPOLIS – In its last two matches prior to its first Summit League cluster of the season next week, the IUPUI women’s tennis team defeated Marian University before falling to Butler Friday at the West Indy Racquet Club.
 
The split moved IUPUI’s record to 4-12 on the season.
 
The Jaguars opened the day taking on the Marian University Knights, who entered as the 19th-ranked team in the most recent NAIA Coaches Poll.
 
The Jags got off to a strong start with all three of its doubles teams earning victories to give them an early one-point cushion.
 
In singles action, Shelby Hullett, Vanessa Whyte and Bobbi Modesto all earned singles wins at the top of the order to clinch the win for the Jags. Jesika Bays and Rachael Bridegroom# were also leading in their matches, but they did not finish due to the fact that the outcome had already been determined.
 
Following the win, IUPUI turned its focus to Butler, but the Bulldogs sprinted out to the early cushion thanks to a sweep of doubles play.
 
Unfortunately for the Jags, the Bulldogs continued their stellar play and won all six singles matches in straight sets to secure the 7-0 win.
 
IUPUI has four matches on tap next weekend in its opening Summit League cluster beginning with a meeting against Fort Wayne and Kansas City on Thursday, March 28. On Saturday, March 29, IUPUI will meet Western Illinois, before closing the cluster against Oakland on Sunday, March 29. All matches will be played in Rochester, Mich.
