INDIANAPOLIS – In the opener of a men’s and women’s doubleheader at the West Indy Racquet Club on Sunday, the IUPUI women’s tennis team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Wright State, 4-3.
The win improved the Jaguars to 3-11 on the season, while the Raiders dipped to 5-8 overall.
The match didn’t get off to the start IUPUI wanted with Wright State winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, but the Jags pulled together in singles to make a rally.
In the bottom four singles matches, both schools took two points with IUPUI winning points at the No. 3 position and the No. 5 position thanks to straight-set victories from
Vanessa Whyte and
Rachael Bridegroom.
With the bottom four singles matches complete, Wright State still held on to a 3-2 advantage with two matches remaining.
At the top spot,
Shelby Hullett jumped out to a 6-2 first-set win, before falling in her second set by an identical score. However, in the final set, Hullett regrouped and emerged with a 6-3 win to put the Jags a point away from the victory.
Meanwhile,
Bobbi Modesto found herself in a third-set match after winning the second set by a 6-0 score to offset a 6-4 opening-set loss. With momentum on her side, Modesto continued her strong play in the final set and came away with a 6-2 win to complete the come-from-behind victory for IUPUI.
The Jaguars continue their three-match homestand next weekend when they host Marian University and Butler on Friday, March 22, at the West Indy Racquet Club.
