JAGS DOWN PHOENIX, 5-2, TO PICK UP FIRST WIN

Shelby Hullett claimed a win at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles to lead IUPUI

CHICAGO – Behind strong doubles play and four singles wins, the IUPUI women’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon in Chicago, as the Jaguars defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 5-2.

The Jags moved to 1-4 on the season, while the Phoenix fell to 0-2.

“Being down a player hurts, but this was a great team win for us,” said interim head coach Pat Nickell. “It’s always great to get a win, but to watch these girls continue to work hard to reach their daily goals is great and  it’s something for us to build on. Chicago State is a good team and we need to come back tomorrow with the same effort as today if we want to get another win.”

Bobbi Modesto and Shelby Hullett teamed up for a good win at the top doubles spot to put IUPUI one doubles win away from clinching the doubles point, but the Phoenix did their best to sway the momentum with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles turning the attention to the No. 2 doubles contest.

In that match Abbey Neff and Rachael Bridegroom managed to defeat Amanda Timm and Maria Anderson, 8-5, sending IUPUI into singles action with a one-point cushion.

In singles action, the top of the Jags lineup came through with impressive victories. It all started at the top with Hullett overcoming a tough first-set loss with a pair of 6-2 wins in sets two and three to give her team a valuable point.

Neff looked to be on her way to an easy win at the No. 2 spot following a 6-1 first-set win, but the second set was more of a struggle. Neff ended up going to a second-set tiebreaker with Stephanie Londre, but Neff came through in the clutch and claimed a 9-7 tiebreaker win to pick up the win.

After that, the Jags needed just one more win out of four matches to secure the victory, but the Jags got two. Modesto came through with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot, while Jesika Bays won a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the fifth position to offset losses at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots.

IUPUI is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 3, when they take on Chicago State.
