VERMILLION, S.D. - The IUPUI women's soccer team earned a 1-1 double overtime tie at South Dakota on Sunday (Nov. 3), putting the wraps on the 2013 campaign. Freshman
Catherine Raster scored IUPUI's lone goal in the 39th minute before USD (6-8-4, 1-5-1 Summit) got even on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.
Both teams had to factor with stiff winds throughout the contest with gusts ranging up to 25-30 miles an hour.
Senior goalie
Giselle Guzman made nine saves in her final collegiate match, closing the year with 88 total stops.
IUPUI (5-9-5, 1-4-2) went in front on Raster's second goal of the season as the rookie's shot from the top of the 18 slipped through the hands of USD goalie Jen Shaefer and over the endline.
"I thought the kids played decently well. We had a pretty good amount of the run of play," Johnson said. "Cat had a really nice goal right before halftime. We had some other chances and just didn't capitalize."
The lead stood until the 56th minute when the Jaguars were whistled for a foul, resulting in a Kylee Willer penalty kick. Willer got a shot past Guzman for her first score of the year.
In the 64th minute, senior
Sarah Carlisle just missed putting the Jaguars back in front when she had a shot attempt cleared off the line by a USD defender. In the 77th minute, junior
Taylor Heidorn had a promising opportunity, but hit a shot wide of target. Heidorn later had two early shots in the first overtime period, the first going wide and the second being saved by reserve goalie Mackenzie Viktor.
Sophomore forward
Kalli Shepler-Tucker also had a pair of shots in overtime as IUPUI outshot the Coyotes 6-3 in the final 20 minutes. Heidorn led all players with five shots (three on goal) and both Raster and Shepler-Tucker had four each.
Jamie Karch paced USD with three shots. Guzman's best save of the day came against Danielle Anderson in the 78th minute when the Jaguars' senior goalie got a hand on a flared shot, pushing it off the underside of the crossbar and back on the field of play.
IUPUI will miss the four-team Summit League Tournament for the fourth consecutive year, but is expected to return a young core a year from now. Only three seniors - Carlisle, Guzman and
Kristin Pierce - saw action for the Jaguars this season and Pierce missed the final eight matches due to injury.
"We made some good progress with some of the younger kids. We get another year of experience for everyone, we've just got to keep moving forward," Johnson said.
Tori Minnich (4 goals, 1 assist) led the Jags in scoring as a rookie and others expected to return include Shepler-Tucker (1 goal, 4 assists), Heidorn (2 goals, 1 assist), Raster (2 goals, 1 assist) and defender
Grace Perkowitz (2 goals, 1 assist).
Defensively, the Jaguars will miss Carlisle and Pierce, but got strong play from
Maddie Riedford and
Lauren Kulaga throughout the season.
