OMAHA, Neb. - As the 2013 IUPUI women's season is coming to an end, a pair of seniors left an imprint on Friday (Nov. 1) night, leading the Jaguars to a 1-0 road win at Omaha. Senior
Sarah Carlisle scored the game-winner in the 52nd minute and classmate
Giselle Guzman recorded her first shutout of the year in goal.
The win stopped the Jaguars' seven-game winless streak and improved their record to 5-9-4 overall and 1-4-1 in The Summit League. Omaha slid to 3-10-2 and 1-5 in league play.
IUPUI got all the offense it would need early in the second half as Carlisle netted her first goal since Sept. 4, 2010. Freshman
Tori Minnich centered a ball to sophomore forward
Sierra Bryant, who was making her first start in nearly a month. Bryant attracted the defenders before sliding a pass out wide to Carlise, making her run from her outside back position. Carlisle finished the play with a shot from eight yards out for her second career score.
"I was so overwhelmed," Carlisle said. "More than anything, I was just happy that I was finally able to finish. There was a lot of pressure, but once I scored and (Guzman) made some really good saves, it kind of relieved that pressure."
Defensively, IUPUI posted its fourth shutout of the season and its first since blanking Valpo on Sept. 13. Guzman was credited with two saves in the win, getting one in each half.
"Tonight was a great example to pass along to the kids that'll be in the program again next year," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "There's no give up in (Carlisle & Guzman), for sure. I think it's incredibly important as we move this program forward that they learn from the examples of those two kids."
Johnson credited his team's early patience for the later success.
"Omaha is a solid team but they didn't have one person in particular on the scouting report that we had to completely focus on to try and shut down. Our girls did a great job of being patient," he said. "I thought we did a good job early of playing possession in the back and their forwards got tired of chasing us. I thought
Lauren Kulaga had one of her best games since she's been here. She was confident coming forward and did a good job overall.
"Maddie (Riedford) and Grace (Perkowitz) did a good job of keeping us organized and keeping things in front of them."
IUPUI finished with an 11-8 shot advantage and 7-2 differential in attempts on goal. Bryant earned her first career point with the second half assist.
"Sierra has been one of our best players in practice every week this season," Johnson said. "I'm very proud of her. She continues to work hard everyday. I think the future is very bright for her and for all of our forwards.
"Tonight, we had quality chances from all of our forwards. Sierra had a couple of really nice shots and Cat (Raster) made some really good runs. I thought Tori was dangerous and Kalli gave us some good stuff."
Despite being eliminated from potentially earning a spot in the four-team Summit League Tournament last weekend, both Carlisle and Johnson saw this as an important two-game swing to cap the 2013 campaign.
"It's really important to finish strong and carry over that momentum to the spring and then into next season," Carlisle said. "We came out hard this entire week in practice and made everything competitive. That made a difference."
IUPUI will cap the two-game road trip at South Dakota on Sunday (Nov. 3) with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
