HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Sophomore
Eduardo Cortes spun yet another impressive chapter in his already storied IUPUI career on Monday (Oct. 21) night, registering a 110 minute shutout at Northern Kentucky in a 0-0 double overtime draw against the Norse. Cortes made five saves, including an impressive diving effort in overtime to help preserve the clean sheet.
"I thought we played well," IUPUI Head Coach Isang Jacob said. "To have only two subs on the road and not giving up a goal shows good work by our guys. They refused to give in and played with a refuse to lose mentality.
"We had some other guys step up - everyone who played, contributed to the outcome and I commend them on the effort."
Cortes and the Jaguars (2-10-3) were even more short-handed than usual on Monday night as both
Ben Ogedegbe and
Jonny Williams were the latest to miss a match due to injuries and sophomore back
Lance Davis was sidelined after accumulating his fifth yellow card in Saturday's win over Fort Wayne. All total, the Jaguars were down seven starters on Monday.
Makeshift or not, the Jaguars' defense made good on Monday, withstanding NKU's (5-3-6) 20 shots, including some testers in the second half.
In the 57th minute, Ben Rossoll got in behind Cortes and the IUPUI defense, but had his shooting angle reduced by a retreating defender and ended up having his shot go outside the left post. Moments later, NKU's Nicholas Chiarot hit a rocket high of target after gathering a loose ball just inside the Jaguars' 18.
IUPUI didn't get a shot on frame until the game's 71st minute when
Olayode Ahmed hit a strike right at NKU goalkeeper A.J. Fleak from 25 yards out. However, moments later, freshman
Cristian Soto just missed getting his second goal in as many matches.
Fleak came off his back line to play a ball, but got tangled with one of his own defenders, leaving Soto all alone along the left side. Soto drilled a shot on frame, but right at an NKU defender who easily cleared the attempt off the back line.
In the start of the first overtime period,
Ayodele Makinde took advantage of some sloppy NKU passing and nearly got the game-winner, but headed a shot off the turf and right at Fleak from in close.
In the second overtime, IUPUI had two of the game's best scoring chances but both went by the board. Freshman
Sam Stronczek had a header glance off the top of the crossbar and back on the field of play, only to be sent away by an NKU defender. On the ensuing corner kick,
Clint Hoffar sent a ball in to Soto, who had his header sail just over the crossbar.
Six different Jaguars finished with two shot attempts, but only three of IUPUI's 15 tries were on target. Nick McGregor and Dalton Robinson led all players with four shots.
Cortes collected his eighth career shutout and his third of the 2013 campaign. In doing so, he lowered his goals against average to 1.72 on the year and upped his save total to 65. With Ogedegbe sidelined, Hoffar became the lone Jaguar to have started all 16 times this season.
The Jaguars will now enjoy a much needed break in the schedule, not competing again for nearly two full weeks.
"Honestly, I'm quite thankful for the break (in the schedule). Hopefully, it'll allow for some time to heal and we'll get some players back. Now the focus is on the conference and continuing to get results."
IUPUI will return to Summit League action on Nov. 2 when the Jaguars head to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois at 12:00 p.m. Eastern. The match time has been moved up from its regularly scheduled time to accommodate WIU football on the same date.
