INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team built an early 1-0 lead, but ultimately had to get even in the second half as the Jaguars played IPFW to a 2-2 draw on Senior Night at Carroll Stadium on Friday (Oct. 18). Freshman
Tori Minnich scored her third goal of the year in the first half and sophomore
Grace Perkowitz tallied the equalizer in the 72nd minute.
IUPUI moved to 4-7-4 overall and 0-3-1 in Summit League play while IPFW went to 3-9-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play. The draw snapped IUPUI's four-game losing streak, but didn't exactly bolster the Jaguars' spot in the league standings.
"It's disappointing because we had opportunities tonight," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "We had every opportunity to win this match and just didn't take advantage of them. Our margin for error is not so great that we can miss on opportunities when they present themselves.
"I thought we played well in stretches, but it wasn't the consistent effort we needed to get the result."
On an already emotional Senior Night, IUPUI channeled those emotions into an early lead and dominated play for the first 20-plus minutes. Minnich netted her team-high third goal, redirecting an
Anna Rode attempt past IPFW goalie Sam Pavlika less than six minutes into the match. IUPUI continued to dictate tempo, outshooting IPFW 8-1 in the game's first 22 minutes.
However, unable to capitalize on scoring chances, IUPUI led just 1-0 at the break. IPFW flipped the momentum in a major way at the start of the second half.
Andie Lazzerini knotted the match in the 50th minute, maneuvering twice to her right before chipping a shot over senior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman for her first score of the year. Just more than two minutes later, Mayson Whitman put IPFW in front with her first goal of the season. Sydney Hoareau was awarded a restart near the endline and sent the ball into the Jaguars' six-yard box. Kat Sutherly flicked a pass to the far post when Whitman slid in and got a finishing touch on a shot.
IPFW's lead stood for more than 20 minutes until IUPUI drew even in the 72nd minute. After
Sierra Bryant drew a foul just inside midfield, senior
Sarah Carlisle hit a brilliant restart through a congested IPFW 18-yard box. Minnich missed on an initial attempt, but Perkowitz was in the right spot and chested a shot just inside the near post to make it 2-2.
IUPUI missed a golden opportunity in the 82nd minute when the Jaguars earned a penalty kick after drawing a foul deep in the Mastodons' box. Freshman
Alyssa Fox took the PK and aimed her shot just inside the right post. However, Pavlika guessed correctly, sprawled to her left and pushed the shot wide of target.
IUPUI stayed on the attack through the end of regulation and nearly got the game-winner in the closing seconds. Rode rolled a ball through enemy territory as the final 10 seconds were ticking away, but none of the IUPUI forwards could get on the end of the cross, which rolled just beyond the far post as time expired.
IUPUI outshot IPFW 5-1 in overtime and 23-15 for the game, but wasn't particularly dangerous after regulation. Carlisle had a shot stuffed in the 97th minute, leading to
Taylor Heidorn firing high on a rebound attempt.
Minnich had a game-high seven shots while Heidorn had four attempts. Brooke Bishir led IPFW with four attempts, putting one on target. Pavlika made eight saves while Guzman closed with three stops. Guzman's best save of the night came against Lazzerini in the 55th minute when she needed both hands to push a shot just over the crossbar, resulting in an IPFW corner kick.
The Jaguars will cap the home slate on Tuesday when they host former Summit League foe Oakland University at Carroll Stadium at 7:00 p.m.. Live stats will be available at the start of that match.
