CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati's Ben Keane slotted a shot through traffic and past IUPUI goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes with one second left in regulation to send the host Bearcats to a stunning 2-1 win over the Jaguars at Gettler Stadium on Wednesday (Oct. 16) night.
Cincinnati earned a corner kick in the closing seconds and Alan Rovira hustled to the far side to take the restart as the final 10 seconds were being count down. His service went directly to Keane, who fired from about 12 yards out through a disorganized Jaguar defense, for his first goal of the year.
The four officials huddled on the far side of the field for nearly two minutes before ruling good on the goal and ending the match.
"It was a heartbreaker, that's all I can say," IUPUI Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "The boys absolutely played well. I'm very proud of the way we played. If we continue to play the way we played today, we'll be fine. The key thing was to come back and get the equalizer once we got down."
The final outcome capped what was shaping up to be an already bizarre finish.
Cincinnati (4-9-1) went in front in the game's eighth minute on a goal from Brad Miguel off a Will Diebold assist. IUPUI (1-10-3) dodged another bullet right before halftime as Cortes made a brilliant save to force a corner kick and a UC attacker had a header hit off the post just before the final horn.
The second half was a little more rough-and-tumble from the outset, ultimately leading to freshman
Jonny Williams knotting the score in the 86th minute. The Jaguars used a long throw-in from
Clint Hoffar to set up the game-tying goal, resulting in Williams heading home his second score of the year. Williams, from nearby Loveland, Ohio, had been tossed to the track's Mondo surface earlier in the half when chasing a ball just in front of his own bench. Rather than get angry, Williams ultimately got the Jaguars even.
Less than a minute later, it appeared as though the Jaguars took the lead when
Patrick Henry blasted an
Ian Block cross past UC goalkeeper Alex Gill and into the upper-left corner of the net. However, the go-ahead goal was immediately called off to an offsides flag.
Just more than 90 seconds later, tempers boiled over when IUPUI freshman
Ayodele Makinde and UC's Matt Remaley got tangled up along the near touch line. Makinde had Remaley wrapped up before players from both sides rushed to their teammates sides with semblances of punches being thrown from various directions. After the officials intervened and conferred, Makinde, Remaley and sophomore
Lance Davis were all issued yellow cards. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, it was Makinde's second yellow card of the night, resulting in a red card ejection and a huge momentum swing.
"I was very proud of the way the guys conducted themselves in that situation. They handled it with class," Jacob said. "(Cincinnati) cleared the bench, we did not. It was unfortunate that it resulted in Ayo receiving a red card and put us a man down."
Oddly enough, Wednesday's loss was the second time in as many seasons the Jaguars lost a match in the final second of play. Last year, the Jaguars fell in similar fashion at Milwaukee on a flying volley with one second remaining.
Michael Sass and Makinde led IUPUI with three shots each while Cortes made five saves in the loss. Rovira and Ashani Walker had four shots each for Cincinnati, which outshot the Jaguars 15-12 overall and 7-5 on goal.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 1-2 all-time against the Bearcats.
The Jaguars will return home for Summit League action on Saturday (Oct. 19) when IUPUI hosts IPFW at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The soccer program will recognize the senior class of Block and
Gregory Efiom just prior to the match and will also be hosting a pregame alumni tailgate behind the stadium. Admission is free and open to the public, which standard university parking rates do apply. Additionally, that match will be streamed live on
IUPUI LIVE! with Greg Rakestraw (pbp) calling the action.
