DENVER - No. 17 Denver got a pair of goals in a 15-second stretch in the first half and used the early momentum to roll past IUPUI on Sunday (Oct. 13), 6-0 at CIBER Field. DU's Kristen Hamilton had two goals and an assist and Anna Willis scored the game-winner in the 14th minute.Â
A bad early stretch all but buried the Jaguars, who were blanked for the fourth straight game. At the 13:30 mark, Denver went in front when Hamilton worked past an IUPUI (4-7-3, 0-3 Summit) defender before crossing a pass to Willis for the game's first score.Â
Fifteen seconds later, DU (12-1-1, 3-0 Summit) was awarded a penalty kick when Hamilton was pulled down by senior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman on a breakaway, leading to a Nicholette Digiacomo score.Â
"That's a good team," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "They went about eight deep and it didn't change anything they did. They're deep and they're really talented and that talent level didn't fall off when they went to the bench.Â
"We had three or four girls that really struggled with the altitude and the travel and that played a role. Maddie (Riedford) lasted about 12 minutes and just couldn't breathe."
Denver scored again in the 31st minute when Francesca Garzelloni scored off assists from Shelby Wesley and Willis, making it 3-0 at the half.
The second half was much of the same as Hamilton scored insurance goals in the 65th and 67th minutes before Taylor Ivins capped the scoring in the 89th minute. Denver outshot IUPUI 30-5 overall and 12-2 on frame. Guzman made six saves in the loss and DU starter Cassidy Rey played almost 60 minutes in the win. Amelia Davis came on in relief and needed one stop in just more than 30 minutes work.Â
Freshman
Tori Minnich led the IUPUI attack with a pair of shots, both of which were on frame.Â
"I thought that Cat (Raster) and Tori did a good job in the attack and kept us moving forward," Johnson said. "#Kalli (Shepler-Tucker) gave a great effort all game long and those three worked well together. I thought
Sarah Carlisle also did a good job, although she couldn't give us the same work rate we're accustomed to."
Sunday's six-goal margin was the largest by an IUPUI team since a 6-0 defeat at Eastern Michigan in September 2001.
"That's a really good team. They went to Nebraska and lost 2-1. We're not on that level - at least not at this point in time," Johnson said. "This doesn't change our goals or our plans for the season. Our goal is to be above .500 and to make the conference tournament.Â
"We control our destiny from here on our. We just need to take control of our destiny. We'll make a few adjustments this week, get back to work and be ready to go next weekend."Â
IUPUI will return home on Friday, Oct. 18 to host IPFW in Summit League action at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The Jaguars will wear pink socks as part of a breast cancer awareness initiative, while the program will also recognize it's senior class that evening.Â
