TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State got goals from four different players and were unruly hosts as the Sycamores dispatched the IUPUI women's soccer team, 4-0, at Memorial Stadium on Friday (Oct. 11) night. The loss was the Jaguars' third straight and fourth-in-a-row to ISU in a series that dates back to 2000.
ISU (5-8) forward Taylor Hancock scored the eventual game-winner in the 20th minute and Abby Reed, Natalie Vaught and Maddie Orf also scored for the Sycamores.
"They wanted things more than we did," IUPUI Head Coach
Chris Johnson said. "When it comes down to making plays in 1-v-1 situations, we didn't get it done. I told (the girls), 'no one is going to give you anything. You have to go out and take it.'
"Everybody needs to take blame for what's going on."
IUPUI (4-6-3) had just five shot attempts and only three on target on Friday night.
Despite being shutout, IUPUI had some early chances to go in front, including a drive from
Taylor Heidorn in the 14th minute that was snared by the ISU goalkeeper. The Jaguars also had an early corner kick roll through the six-yard box, but go untouched and eventually out of danger.
ISU took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on Hancock's header, set up by a Taylor Reed corner kick. Just more than two minutes later, Reed scored on a header past senior goalkeeper
Giselle Guzman, making it 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
The hosts added insurance goals in the 58th and 84th minutes, the last of which was Orf's unassisted effort. The four goals allowed were the most by an IUPUI foe this season. The Jaguars came into playing having yielded just 11 goals in 12 matches all season long.
The Jaguars were without senior back
Kristin Pierce for the third straight match and redshirt freshman
Samantha Bathurst was pressed into a starting role in her absence. Freshman
Carley Lombard put up a strong effort in a reserve role, earning extended minutes in the defensive third.
"Carley did a good job," Johnson said. "She was definitely a bright spot. She came in and gave us good minutes, held her ground and played strong."
Guzman closed with four saves in 90 minutes work and ISU goalie Brittany San Roman made three stops in the shutout. Sophomore forward
Kalli Shepler-Tucker was credited with two of the team's five shots.
"Kalli gave a great effort all night long," Johnson said.
The Jaguars were shutout for the third straight game and have been held to three goals in the last seven matches.
"We've just got to give it time for kids to gain experience," Johnson said. "We've got a lot of young kids playing those key positions up front. They need to continue to improve, grow and do the little things like playing with their elbows up and being able to hold the ball to make us more effective offensively."
Kate Johnson led the ISU attack with three attempts.
IUPUI will return to Summit League action on Sunday when the Jaguars take on league newcomer Denver at CIBER Field at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. The matchup is just the second meeting all-time between the two schools.
