Isang Jacob Postgame
INDIANAPOLIS - For 90 minutes, a strong crowd of more than 400 spectators waited for an opportunity to get energized, but it was Wright State's free-wheeling offense that provided the electricity at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Tuesday (Oct. 1) night, using a 32 shot assault to get past IUPUI, 2-0. WSU's Jacob Stovall scored the eventual game-winner in the 26th minute and Chris Dupont added insurance in the 78th minute.
Eric Lynch assisted on both WSU (3-4-1) goals, both coming against IUPUI (0-8-3) freshman goalkeeper
Christian Lomeli.
"We knew (Wright State) had an explosive attack. They're very athletic," IUPUI Head Coach
Isang Jacob said. "We knew what they were going to bring. They're a good team - their record doesn't reflect the strength of their team."
Wright State took the lead midway through the first half, setup by Lynch's restart. After a foul near midfield, Lynch drove the ball just inside the Jaguars' 18 and Stovall redirected a shot past the Jaguars' freshman goalie for his first score of the year.
Despite being outshot 16-7 in the first half, the Jaguars attack was still dangerous, largely on the ability to get long throw-ins deep in WSU territory. Freshman
Sam Stronczek just missed sniping a header in the 27th minute, and in the 31st minute,
Michael Sass had a header sneak just outside the left post. Junior
Matt Smith flared a cross to the far post, but Sass' attempt was just off target from in close.
Later, freshman
Patrick Henry also had a good scoring chance go by the boards in the 40th minute.
After another long throw, the ball popped free to Henry just beyond the six-yard box, but the rookie was forced to rush his shot with defenders converging and pushed the attempt over the crossbar.
"We knew their defense was going to give us (long throw-ins). Then again, we're playing Sam, who's usually a back. Sam did a good job filling in at that position; that is not a position he's used to," Jacob said.
The second half belonged to Wright State as the Raiders outshot the Jaguars 16-4 after intermission. While Lomeli and the Jaguars' makeshift back four stayed strong, the Raiders finally added insurance with just more than 12 minutes remaining. The play began with Derek Zuniga rolling a sharp pass up the right side to Lynch, who one-touched a pass to the middle to Dupont. Dupont then drilled a shot through traffic, tucking it past Lomeli for his second goal of the year.
Lomeli landed awkwardly on the play and later had to be removed from the match, giving way to
Jess Clark for the final nine-plus minutes. Lomeli made four saves before departing while Clark's sheet was clean from there.
IUPUI came into the match down to just 15 healthy bodies with at least eight sidelined due to injury.
"I have not had a chance to play my true 11," Jacob said. "It's so frustrating. I've never seen this before. It's unfortunate. We just have to keep our heads up and continue to play the game. I give credit to the players that have stepped up. We're going to continue to represent this university with pride and continue to play everyday."
WSU goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer made three first half saves to earn the shutout. Senior
Ian Block had two of the Jaguars' shots on goal and he and Stronczek accounted for six of the team's 11 attempts. Wesley Cain led the Raiders with six shot attempts and both Zuniga and Lynch had four each.
IUPUI wore Live United t-shirts during pregame warmups as part of United Way Night at Carroll Stadium. This marks the second straight year the IUPUI men's soccer program has partnered with United Way for a promotion.
IUPUI will return to Summit League action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when the Jaguars host Omaha at 7:00 p.m. as part of White Out Weekend. Fans in attendance are urged to wear white in support of the Jaguars. Additionally, the match will be streamed online as part of the
IUPUI LIVE! subscription service as Morgan Adcock (pxp) will be on the call.
