INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI women’s tennis team returned home in search of its first win of the season on Friday evening against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but the Panthers defeated the Jaguars, 6-1, at the West Indy Racquet Club.
The loss dropped the Jags to 0-3 on the young season.
In doubles play, the Jaguars top duo of
Vanessa Whyte and
Abbey Neff fell, 8-2, only to have
Jesika Bays and
Rachael Bridegroom pick them up with an 8-2 win of their own to bring the match down to the No. 2 spot. At the second position,
Bobbi Modesto and
Shelby Hullett were squaring off against Milwaukee’s Kelly Fritz and Dana Shannon. Unfortunately for the Jags, Hullett and Modesto fell by a break, 8-6, giving the Panthers the 1-0 advantage.
In singles action, the Jaguars battled across the board, but they were only able to emerge with one victory.
That victory came from Whyte, who eked out a 6-4 first-set win in her match at the No. 2 spot, before picking up a 6-2 second-set victory to win her match.
Unfortunately for the Jaguars, they fell in straight sets in four matches, before Bridegroom fell in three sets at the No. 5 spot.
IUPUI continues its homestand on Saturday, Jan. 26, when it hosts Dayton at the West Indy Racquet Club at 2 p.m.
