INDIANAPOLIS – Three seniors - Josh Davis, Luke Green and Mitchell Gauger - competed in front of the home fans for the final time on Saturday and helped the Jags earn a win over Western Illinois despite falling to Saint Louis.

The Jaguars defeated eked out a 73.0 – 67.0 over Western Illinois, while falling to Saint Louis, 82.0 – 58.0.

“I was much more pleased with the way we performed today. We came out with a lot more energy and managed to finish up a tough weekend on a very positive note,” said head coach Matt Bos. “Over the next couple of weeks we will begin to sharpen up and start getting some much needed rest leading into the Summit League Championships.”

“I am proud of our seniors and what they have meant to this program,” Bos added. “This was a great way for them to finish up their last meets here at the Nat.”

The men’s mile was the first individual event of the day and Rich Sunkel got IUPUI off to a good start. The freshman barely missed out on an IUPUI Top 10 time, but he finished in second at 16:41.88, just .48 seconds behind Western Illinois’ Matt Abercrombie.

Tony Carroll narrowly missed out on the Jags first victory of the day in the 200 freestyle, but managed to earn IUPUI another second-place finish. Carroll trailed by 1.55 seconds after four lengths, before making a surge in the final 100. However, Carroll finished just .36 seconds shy of Saint Louis’ Brendon Hulseman. Carroll’s time was the fifth-best in program history.

Alexander Rhoda and Ben Weingart added a 2-3 finish for the Jags in the 100 breast timing in at 1:00.35 and 1:01.93, marking the first dual podium for the Jags in an event on the day.

The first win of the day for IUPUI came from freshman John Kampuis, who came through with a time of 2:00.45 in the 200 fly.

Following a break, Sunkel did what he did to start the meet and posted a third-place finish in the 100 free at 48.66.

Down the stretch, Carroll and Rhoda both picked up wins for the Jags in the 500 freestyle and the 200 IM, respectively, with both notching Top 10 times. Carroll nearly won by 10 seconds in the 500 free after posting a time of 4:44.25, the fifth-best time in the IUPUI record books, while Rhoda won the 200 IM at 1:57.96, the 10th-best mark in Jags history.

In his final home meet of his career, Gauger swept the one- and three-meter dives by putting up a score of 286.60 in the one-meter and a season-best score of 322.95 in the three-meter.

The Jags return to action on Friday, Jan. 25, when they travel to Rochester, Mich., to take on Summit League foe Oakland.
