INDIANAPOLIS – In its first action in more than a month, the IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team fell to both Xavier and Ball State Friday evening at the IU Natatorium.

“We had some good races in spots, but being physically worn down makes it tough to perform at a high level,” said head coach Matt Bos. “However, every team is in the same situation right now and tonight these teams were mentally tougher than we were. We need to come back with a different mindset tomorrow to set the tone for our upcoming training.”

Daniel Saunders opened the individual events with an impressive showing in the 1,000 free. Saunders eked out a win in the event touching the wall in a personal-best time of 9:57.18, which moved him into fourth in IUPUI history.

Rich Sunkel was next up for the Jaguars in the 200 freestyle and the freshman swam the eight lengths in a time of 1:45.12, setting a new personal best and placing him third.

Tony Carroll registered the second individual win for the Jags on the evening winning the 100 back in a time of 52.24, the fourth-best mark in school history. Carroll picked up the victory by a narrow .14 seconds over Ball State’s Mike Weber.

The night wasn’t over for Carroll as he then proceeded to pick up another podium finish placing second in the 50 free at 21.75. Following a break, he closed out his strong meet with a win in the 100 freestyle at 47.35.

Similar to Carroll, Sunkel added a second-place finish to his third-place showing from earlier by clocking in at 4:49.21 in the 500 free.

In diving, Cody Watts and Mitchell Gauger went 1-2 in both the one- and three-meter dives with Watts winning the one-meter and Gauger winning the three-meter.

The Jags are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they host Saint Louis and Western Illinois at the IU Natatorium.  The meet is set for 2 p.m. and IUPUI will be honoring its three seniors in Josh Davis, Luke Green and Gauger as part of Senior Day.
