YPSILANTI, Mich. - After playing Eastern Michigan to a scoreless draw for over 80 minutes on Friday (Sept. 7), IUPUI saw the host Eagles tally twice in the final nine minutes to escape with a 2-0 victory. Cara Cutaia netted the game-winner with 8:44 left in regulation before Angela Vultaggio added insurance with just more than two minutes to play.
IUPUI (1-6) had quality scoring chances, but were ultimately blanked for the fourth time on the young season. After weathering an initial storm, the Jaguars had a flurry of attempts against EMU (3-2-1) goalkeeper Jenna O'Dell midway through the first half.
Sophomore
Brooke Barczewski had a rebound attempt fly high of frame in the 18th minute and later
Mackenzie Calvert put a tester on target, only to have O'Dell glove it. Later,
Ashley Doreski had a shot plucked away by O'Dell.
"We outshot them in the first half 9-8. It was not a lot of quality chances, but we got some chances. We're making progress," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "We got a good start out of the gates (in the second half), but couldn't connect or get that final touch."
Even though EMU outshot IUPUI 8-3 in the second half and 16-12 for the match, the Jaguars still had chances. Freshman
Paxton Ott had a header fly wide right, just minutes ahead of EMU's go-ahead goal.
Eastern took the lead when Cutaia netted a one-timer past junior goalkeeper
Kristin Haseley, thanks to assists from Angela Vultaggio and Stephanie Clarke. The Eagles continued to keep the Jaguars' offense at bay before Vultaggio put the game out of reach in the closing minutes with her third score of the year.
"We were pushing forward and it resulted in a breakaway," Johnson said. "They got in behind (Kristin) Pierce and scored the goal."
Sophomore
Taylor Heidorn led IUPUI with three shot attempts while Doreski, Calvert and freshman
Kalli Shepler-Tucker had two each. Haseley made five saves in her first start of the year and fell to 0-2 overall.
"We were able to find Doreski a lot more today and she was dangerous," Johnson said. "(Haseley) got the start in goal and was solid. She made some nice plays in the first half - she was solid in there. You can't fault her on the goals.
"The girls definitely played hard. We're definitely making progress. We can play with these teams, we're just not getting results. We need to score some goals though."
O'Dell made five stops in the shutout.
IUPUI will return home on Sunday (Sept. 9) for game two of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader. The Jaguars will host Wright State in non-conference action, beginning at approximately 2:30 p.m.. Like all home matches this season, admission is free and open to the public.
