INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will look to get back in the win column this weekend when the Jaguars continue the current three-game homestand at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The Jaguars will host Central Arkansas on Friday (Sept. 7) night before then hosting Northern Kentucky on Sunday (Sept. 9) at noon. Both matches are free of charge and open to the public.
Friday's match is International Student Night as an invitation has been extended to various groups on campus in an effort to pack Carroll Stadium. On Sunday, the Jaguars will host Military Appreciation Day and members of the IUPUI ROTC will be presenting the colors prior to that day's doubleheader.
The Jaguars (1-4) dropped their fourth straight on Wednesday night in a hard fought 3-1 loss to Xavier University. IUPUI pulled even midway through the second half on Kyle Hyland's fourth goal of the season, but XU answered with a pair of goals in the 71st and 76th minutes to put the match away. Hyland, who had just two career goals entering the year, upped his Summit League leading goal total to four through five matches. He and junior Ian Block are the top two in the league in points at eight and five, respectively. Defensively, freshman Eduardo Cortes leads The Summit with 28 saves, but has a 1.75 goals against average in his four starts. Junior Ryan Onwukwe made his first career start on Wednesday and yielded all three scores to the Musketeers.
Central Arkansas (3-1) has wins over Summit League foes Western Illinois and Oral Roberts already this year entering Friday's match with the Jaguars. Manuel Montal leads the Bears with two goals in four games, while both Michael Quinn and Mickey Segura have early season goals as well. In net, Patxi Shortsleeve has a 0.48 goals against average in four starts and yielded just two goals all year. Friday's match will mark the second-ever meeting between the two schools in men's soccer with the Jaguars having won 2-1 in Arkansas on Sept. 10, 2010.
NKU (0-4) is winless to start the year with all four losses coming away from home. The Norse dropped road matches at Green Bay and Milwaukee to start the year before losing to both Radford and High Point at the Flash Gordon Invitational last weekend. Mohammad Salhieh has NKU's lone goal of the season while both Toby Frohlich and A.J. Fleak have seen extended action in goal. Fleak has a 1.78 goals against average in two starts while Frohlich has a 2.78 GAA and 14 saves in his two starts. Sunday's meeting will be the second-ever meeting with Northern Kentucky as well with the Norse having defeated the Jaguars 1-0 on Sept. 30, 1998 in the only regular season matchup. The two schools have played exhibition meetings prior to NKU's move to Division I play this season.
