MEN'S SOCCER TEAM TO HOST XAVIER ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Jaguars look to snap three-game skid against Musketeers at Carroll Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 5)

9/4/2012 12:15:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - Looking to snap a three-game slide, the IUPUI (1-3) men's soccer team will return home to host Xavier (2-0-1) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 5) night at 7:00 p.m.. Admission is free and open to the public and Wednesday's match is Professor Night as the soccer program has extended a special invitational to selected faculty/staff members on campus.

Head coach Isang Jacob's men's team is champing at the bit to kickoff the upcoming three-game homestand after a pair of losses in Milwaukee this past weekend. The Jaguars dropped the opener to host Milwaukee 3-2 on a goal with one second left in regulation on Friday (Aug. 31) before falling 2-1 to Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 2).

Junior Ian Block scored goals in each match over the weekend while senior Kyle Hyland netted his third score of the year on Friday night. Freshman Eduardo Cortes played all 180 minutes in goal and yielded five scores in the losses. Two of the five goals came via penalty kick including Sunday's game-winner.

Offensively, both freshman Michael Sass and junior Gregory Efiom collected their first career assists on Block's goal on Sunday. For the year, Block and Hyland have combined to score all five of the Jaguars' goals.

Xavier claimed wins over both Cincinnati and Wright State this past week and entered last week ranked No. 24/RV in the season's early going. The Musketeers are led by senior forward Luke Spencer, who has four goals in three matches and was pegged to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday. Junior midfielder Matt Walker has a team-high two assists and senior goalkeeper Justin Marshall has a 0.93 goals against average and eight saves in three matches.

"They're a very solid team - a very veteran team. They play like a team that's been together and they've gotten results," Jacob said. "I trust our fans will lift us up when we play this week. We've got a really good thing going on with our fans right now and I think the boys will rise to the occasion."

The Jaguars come in at 0-3-1 all-time against Xavier with the series having been started in 2007. The Musketeers won last year's meeting 1-0 in Cincinnati on Sept. 22. In fact, the Jaguars have never scored a goal against XU, having been outscored in the four previous meetings 7-0. The lone tie was a scoreless draw on Sept. 24, 2008 in Indianapolis.
