INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI junior goalkeeper Giselle Guzman recorded her second shutout of the year including a collection heart stopping saves as the Jaguars opened Summit League play with a 0-0 double overtime tie against South Dakota at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Friday (Sept. 28) night. Guzman totaled faced 15 shots and made nine saves as IUPUI claimed its first home result of the season.

USD's Jen Shaefer was equal to the task, making seven stops to stonewall the Jags.

IUPUI (2-9-1, 0-0-1 Summit) dominated the run of play, including earning two corner kicks in the game's first 10 minutes, but was unable to get quality chances in the finishing third in the early going. The Jaguars finally looked as though they would break through in the 22nd minute when freshman Kalli Shepler-Tucker drilled a cross in front of Shaefer to junior Ashley Doreski running towards the back post. Left with a tough shooting angle, Doreski hit her shot right at Shaefer, who easily smothered the ball for one of her seven stops.

Moments later, Shepler-Tucker got free in behind the USD (1-7-3, 0-0-1) back line, but hit her attempt from 14 yards out right into Shaefer's stomach for yet another save. Guzman made just two first half saves, but was tested more frequently in the second half as both teams chased the potential game-winning goal.

In the 75th minute, Danielle Anderson slipped between IUPUI's center backs and had a clear cut run to goal with only Guzman ahead of her. Guzman challenged off her line and made a brilliant block of the shot to keep game tied and swing momentum in the Jaguars' favor.

USD had another good look go awry in the 88th minute when Jenny Teslow found a crease on the right flank, but blasted her shot just high of her target.

Guzman's best work of the night may have come in the closing minutes of the first overtime period when she rejected an initial Teslow attempt before erasing the USD attacker's angle, forcing her to fire wide right from 10 yards out.

IUPUI retaliated with its best scoring chance of the night in the 107th minute, thanks to Mackenzie Calvert's individual effort. Calvert weaved through the defense before unloading a shot from the top of the 18. Shaefer dove to her right and knocked the ball down, but was unable to cover the ball as it bounced to her right. Unfortunately, the Jaguars didn't crash the net on the attempt and USD was able to get an easy clearance.

"That's the only play the entire game, the whole 110 minutes, I thought we needed to have a little more effort out of our kids," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "Other than that, I was pleased with their effort all night long."

Guzman headlined the effort, upping her saves total to 68 while dropping her goals against average to 2.12 in the process.

"I can't say enough about Gigi. She made three saves out there on breakaway plays that really kept us in the game when we needed her to," Johnson said. "We've talked over the years about keepers being able to make those plays. There have been times when Jessie Mann did it and there were times when Jamie Farrell did it and Gigi can now be in that same company.

"We had a few breakdowns and in the past, we've missed that situation."

Teslow led USD with five shots while Shepler-Tucker had five shots, putting three on frame. Both Doreski and sophomore Taylor Heidorn had three attempts each as IUPUI outshot the Coyotes, 18-15. Despite outshooting an opponent for just the second time this season, IUPUI was blanked for the sixth time in 2012.

"You hope that your frontline kids see that effort on her part and do everything they can to put a ball in the net," Johnson said of the forward's play after Guzman's stop late in regulation.

IUPUI will cap The Summit League home weekend on Sunday (Sept. 30) when the Jaguars host UMKC at Carroll Stadium in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Admission to Sunday's match is free and open to the public.
