INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open up Summit League play on Saturday (Sept. 22) night when the Jaguars host Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. As part of U.S. Youth Soccer Month, IUPUI and the Indiana Soccer Association will host a free clinic on the upper field for youth players (ages 4-14) beginning at 5:30 p.m..
The pregame clinic is open to kids of all skill levels and participants are welcome to come on the game field for open play during halftime of Saturday's match.
"We're always excited to have kids visit our campus, come out to our matches and cheer on our boys at our beautiful facility," head coach Isang Jacob said. "Our boys have done a good job of rising to the occasion at home this year and a big part of that has been our fan base. They deserve a lot of the credit for their continued support."
On the field, IUPUI (3-6-1, 0-0 Summit) grabbed some positive momentum on Wednesday night with a 1-0 shutout of Valparaiso in front of a raucous crowd of 965 at Carroll Stadium. Senior
Kyle Hyland tallied his sixth goal of the season, thanks to an assist from classmate
Joshio Sandoval, and freshman goalkeeper
Eduardo Cortes upped his nation leading save total to 59 in the process. Cortes finished Wednesday's win with eight stops including plucking a breakaway opportunity in the 74th minute as the Jaguars clung to the one-goal lead.
The win snapped IUPUI's three-game winless streak and upped the Jaguars record to 3-1 at Carroll Stadium this season. Cortes continued his home brilliance this year, having not allowed a goal on the Carroll Stadium pitch in his rookie season.
Eastern Illinois (2-6, 0-0) has wins over Lipscomb and Loyola (Ill.) this season, both coming by 2-0 scores. Tayron Martin and Chris Boswell lead the Panthers with two goals apiece and Jake Irwin has a team-high three assists in eight games. Evan Turner and Garrett Creasor have both started four times in net with the latter owning a 1.50 goals against average and 16 saves in his four starts. Turner is 0-4 overall and has a 2.39 GAA and 20 stops in his four starts.
IUPUI and EIU played to a double overtime scoreless draw a year ago in Charleston, Ill. with both Turner and
Tyler Keever performing well in the tie. The physical match included eight yellow cards and a red card between the two squads, along with 42 total fouls.
The Jaguars are 3-3-3 all-time against Eastern Illinois with all nine meetings coming in IUPUI's Division I era. IUPUI is 2-1-1 in the previous four meetings in Indianapolis and hasn't beaten the Panthers since a 1-0 victory at Kuntz Stadium on Oct. 1, 2008. The teams have tied in two of the last three meetings.
