MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - For the second time in as many matches, a late goal came back to bite the IUPUI men's soccer team as the Jaguars capped play at the 38th Panther Invitational with a 2-1 loss to Canisius. After taking a 1-0 lead in the game's 82nd minute, IUPUI yielded goals in the 83rd and 87th minutes to fall to 1-3 on the young season.

"Right now, we're still trying to find out who our leaders are on the field," IUPUI head coach Isang Jacob said. "Because of how young we are and our chemistry, we just don't have that right now. It's something we're going to continue to work on.

"We had the momentum, we had the lead, but the one thing that summed up this weekend was our inability to manage games, especially at the end of games."

After 80 minutes of stalemate, junior Ian Block put the Jaguars in front with his second goal in as many games. Freshman Michael Sass played the ball forward to Gregory Efiom, who played Block forward for a breakaway. The Indiana-transfer made the most of the opportunity, getting a shot past Canisius goalkeeper Kareem Gray from 12 yards out.

Canisius (2-0-2) pulled even exactly 48 seconds later when Asani Samuels scored from in close off a deflected ball, swinging the momentum back in favor of the Golden Griffins. The crippling blow came with 2:09 left in regulation when a Jaguars foul resulted in a Canisius penalty kick chance. Gavin Falconer capitalized for his second score of the season.

"We're fouling incessantly," Jacob said. "The fouls are killing us right now. Part of that is being a young team, but (the fouls) are killing us right now.

"I can see that we want it, but we have to play smarter. We definitely have some things we need to clean up as we're moving forward."

IUPUI had some great scoring chances early including a flurry where Efiom had an initial shot knocked down and Block's rebound opportunity was stopped by Gray. Moments later, Efiom had a shot stopped by Gray and Devon Orben's rebound attempt was cleared off the line by a Canisius defender. Both Eduardo Cortes and Gray closed with six saves each.

Canisius outshot the Jags 27-10 overall and had twice as many corner kicks (6-3) than IUPUI. Both Block and Kyle Hyland were named to the All-Tournament Team following the event. Sunday's match was the first-ever meeting between the two schools as Canisius capped the tournament with a pair of wins. The Golden Griffins jumped ahead of Eastern Illinois with three goals before seeing the Panthers pull even in the second half before getting the win.

IUPUI will now return home for three consecutive home matches beginning with Wednesday's (Sept. 5) game against Xavier University at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. with live stats being available on IUPUIJags.com shortly after the start.
