INDIANAPOLIS - Miami senior Jess Kodiak scored a pair of goals and the visiting Redhawks tallied three insurance goals in less than 10 minutes as IUPUI fell in its 2012 home opener, 5-0. Sophomore Taylor Heidorn led the IUPUI attack with four shot attempts while Ashley Doreski had two attempts. The loss dropped the Jaguars to 0-2 to start the year while Miami improved to 2-0.

IUPUI (0-2) fell behind in the game's 33rd minute when Miami's Lauren Mathews took advantage of a loose ball inside the 18 and chipped a shot just over junior goalkeeper Giselle Guzman. Freshman defender Grace Perkowitz got tangled with a Miami attacker, leaving Mathews unmarked and on the receiving end of a bouncing Kelsey Dinges cross. From there, she was able to easily arc a shot over Guzman for her first score of the season.

Miami (2-0) seemingly seized control of the match right before halftime as Kayla Zakrzewski angled a shot inside the far post for the game's second goal with just 15 ticks left before halftime.

"That play, as well as the first goal were plays that our kids have got to learn to emotionally bounce back from. In the first five minutes of the game, they put it on us pretty good and we were able to not give up a goal at that point in time," head coach Chris Johnson said. "Then we give up a little bit of a flukey goal on the first one and there just wasn't any passion. We've got to be a lot stronger and a lot more stable."

The late goal amped up Miami's momentum, which clearly carried over to the second half as the Redhawks scored three times in the opening 13 minutes.

Kodiak scored the first, rolling a shot into an empty net after Guzman was caught off her line trying to control a rolling cross though the six-yard box. In the 55th minute, Katy Dolesh hit a shot through traffic after Kodiak had set up the score with a corner kick. Kodiak capped her five-point half with a header inside the near post, thanks to a Dolesh assist.

Deep in the hole, IUPUI had some quality attempts late in the match but was unable to avoid being shutout for the second time on the young season. Junior Sarah Carlisle hit a tester of a shot at Miami reserve goalkeeper Madison Ryan, who bobbled the chance but kept the ball just inside the endline. Later, Heidorn put a shot on frame that Ryan had to push just wide of the post, resulting in an IUPUI corner kick. Freshman Paxton Ott also had a scoring chance, but was unable to get much mustard on the attempt as she was pressured by the Miami defense.

Overall, Miami outshot IUPUI 23-11 and 14-5 on goal. Guzman yielded five goals in just under 60 minutes before classmate Kristin Haseley pitched a shutout over the final 30 minutes.

"I was very happy with the way (Haseley) came in and played there. That was a tough situation to walk in at that point when you're already down five goals," Johnson said. "She gave us a good, emotional presence out there on the field. She did a good job of talking out there, organizing the troops in front of her and kind of keeping the spirits up. I was very happy with what she did."

Allison Horenberg was credited with the win in goal for Miami, playing just more than 60 scoreless minutes and making two saves. Ryan made three clean stops in the final 29-plus minutes.
